i had petsmart check my water and my nitrate level is high.
wat can i do to lower it? is this an immediate danger to the fish or could the waterchanges get it lowered? 160 ppm

Used to have a couple fish tanks, had hermit crab, and some cool fish. Had a turtle at one time too

been awhile since somebody wrote in this thread so imma try and keep it alive for the fishpeeps on superhonda. i have a 55 gallon with 3 blue rams, a black neon tetra, a pleco, 4 silver hatchets, and then i have a 20 gallon with 2 african cichlids in it for now. still workin to get more fish in both tanks and have the plants growin to where it looks natural and all. ill post up pics of the 55 whenever i find my camera!! i just got though cleaning the hood and lightshroud because that faunky white crusty stuff was starting to build up on it.

Thats pretty bad if the test was accurate. Normally you want to keep it under 20 ppm nitrate. I wouldn't do a huge water change, but several small ones for the next couple of days so that the change is gradual and won't stress out the fish. Probably around 25-30% daily until you get the nitrates down. Good luck with the tank.

ive done a 80, 50, and 20 percent change and still no change...wtf??

Did you clean out all of the waste in the rocks yet?
Is 160ppm the max reading on the chart for the test?

so it might be at 300ppm and its just not reading it right? but in that cases its been about 10 days..wouldnt my fishes be dead?
theres no way to clean all the wastes but i vacuum the shit out of it already looks pretty damn clean and clear

I would think they would be pretty stressed, not sure at what nitrate level they would be dead. Have you tried a drop test to see if the other test you are doing is correct?
Either way i just stick to doing a few more water changes and retest in about a week or two.
