im looking for something that is really simple to keep up with, like betas. but i dont like the fact that there can only be one in a tank, to me thats too boring. i really what to keep it simple. what are some fishes out there that can live without filters and pumps?

all fish need filters, but the strongest fish health wise, and if you want a lot are MALE guppies if you mix them they will breed like crazy and female guppies arent really colorful. Another thing that you can do is setup a tank of plants and establish it then add some hardy fish (guppies, platys, molly's) and run it filterless, but you have to have enough plants to take in the nitrates and ammonia, and they have to stay healthy

Only fish that will do well in only one gal of water with nothing is a betta (don't get be started on goldfish in a bowl ).


If you were to get at least a 5 gal tank you could mix them with small school of white clouds. But you would need at least a small power head to circulate the surface of the water to promote CO2/ O2 exchange.

Guppies have been inbreed for far too many years to still be considered hardy like they were before. Mollies need ok water quality (filter and heater) to stay healthy. Smaller tetras would be a better heartier fish to start out with, but you would still need some type of mechanical filtration and a heater.



Well i guess i'll take this time to update with a pic of my 29 gal tank.




I took out one piece of the rainbow rock and some old plants. I spreadout the remaining plants and put a couple clippings of bacopa and rotala to see if they will grow well and form a better cover on the right side of the tank. Can't really see them to well in the pic but they are all planted behind the remaining piece of rainbow rock in the tank.





Here's a pic of my new filter for the 29 gal. Ehiem 2215 canister filter. All the mechanical filtration on this tank is now pushing 664 gph (est.). :evil All the water in the tank is being filtered at almost 23 times and hour. Overkill.

nice tank, i like the plant setup, i never have been really able to enjoy plants because Honda and Acura uproot everything, and before that I had 3 red belly piranha

hey thank for the replies. well so far i went out and bought 5 guppies 2 males and 3 females. do u think they'll breed? and how long should i clean the tank?

they breed like mad within the next 2 months u can have about 14 guppies total, because it takes about 3wks for them to have the babies and usually 3 or 4 live that dont die or get eaten, with guppies i'd prolly clean the tank about every 5wks if you have a 20 gal or bigger, if smaller then about every 3 wks

so whats a good, cheap set up tank/filter/etc shit-wise?

i dont want a huge tank or anything, but i think it looks cool at night with live plants and the moon lighting...as long as the pump and filter and stuff doesnt keep me awake.


also, when i was a little kid i remember i had these little frogs that lived only in the water. what are those called? that would be sweet, along with a crab or crawdad.

the gf and i just picked up our whole set up for 200 bucks. 20 gallon, it had the filter, hood, light, heater all in one box. then the misc stuff

The males get agitated when you rub your balls on the glass. So if you can avoid doing that they should remain calm.
