why would you want to give someone a few dollars extra just because they do their job well? I mean, they already get a paycheck. I'm not trying to say don't tip anyone, I just want to know your reason behind it so cool off. take for instance a waiter, he does a good job serving you, granted. but that is his JOB, he gets a paycheck just like you and me. what reason do I have to give him the money I sweated and sacrificed to get? maybe I'm just paranoid now cause I had some financial classes this morning about saving money ~.^
Biggest reason I tip is because my mom used to be a waitress.
They do get a paycheck but its about half on minimum wage. Typically $4.
Some people don't tip at all. Other people think that they own a waiter or waitress why they are in the resturant. If you have never dealt with the public then its tough to explain. People are a pain in the ass
Now to the question. I tip standard for normal service. I tip about 10% for shitty service.
I tip about 30% for great service. I like to make peoples days
And for the bar
If I'm at a busy bar, I will tip as high as 50%, this basically ensures that I will get my next drink at a faster rate than the guy next to me. It also help to get hella mixed drinks
Mods: nothing to make it fast and plenty of things to make it heavy
Do you have any idea what waiters make an hour in actual wages? $2.13 per hour...do you think that's going to be enough to make any sort of living? The idea is that they are serving at your beck and call and therefore we kick a lil cash back to them in gratitude. If the restaurant industry had to pay waiters/waitresses an actual wage (min. or above) not only would the restaurant suffer but so would the employees cuz there's no way the business would pay as much as you can make waiting tables. That's also why you should always treat your servers well, remember that they are in contact with your food and drink and if they think you're not going to tip them they're going to treat you like shit...

I also base my tips on the quality of service. If they do a poor job for whatever reason (usually because I'm fairly young and therefore apparently a bad tipper) then they're going to get a matching shitty tip. If the service is average then they'll get their 15%. If they do a great job then they'll get 20-30%. Been there, done that...you can make great money if you have the personality and patience to deal with a variety of people.
then get a better job i guess not trying to be an ass i started a job at minimum wage before really but if you aren't making enough get a better job there are plenty of minimum wage jobs where there are no tips. Not saying tipping is bad but they get payed what they get payed that isn't our fault

people don't realize that this is the TROOF. i been a bartender for 2 yrs and if you're yelling at me "HEY YOU" and i glance at you to hold on a minute til i finish this drink i'm currently making, yelling it like 5x in a row, i get anoyed and see someone else waiting patiently i'll fa SHO go to them before the other dude. another thing is if you don't tip me the first time, 9x outta 10 you're gonna tip me shitty, if anything, the next time. so what's the incentive??
and just like it's easy to make someone smile, it's just as easy to make the bartender smile. simple as that. and as for waiters/resses, it's NOT their job to make you smile. it's their job to bring you what you're ordering. making people smile is a natural thing people want to do, they like to be happy, so it comes natural to most people (esp. knowing they're in a very personal/people-dealing industry). but it's not technically a part of their job. they just know it'll ensure good customer feedback and generally bigger tips. and good customer feedback = better tratment from your manager since they don't want to lose that employee, usually

Very true
Honestly I used to go to the bar every friday. When I came in and the bartender saw me. She would open a beer for me and have it waiting.
Now I only go about every 3 weeks, still the same thing though. Doesn't matter how packed the place is, or if I have even made it to the bar yet, its there waiting.
