well, i have some updates for everybody. first of all, i received a check from my insurance company geico, for $5,248.89 which is the rough estimate to repair my car. yesterday i stopped by the body shop where i decided to bring my car to and spoke to the owner. he said that the estimate missed a few things. here is the NY state law...
when an insurance adjuster is performing an estimate he or she is not allowed to touch the car, or physically remove any parts of the car. everything is done visually so they really cannot see inside anywhere to assess frame damage etc..
when a car is damaged so badly that the cost of repair is 75% or more of its value it is considered to be totaled. so a $10k car with $7.5k worth of damage or more would be totaled.
in my case the book value of my car in stock condition is not more than 4 or 5k, i know this for sure, so in stock form my car would have been totaled a long time ago. here is the tricky part. i have thousands of dollars of work done to my car. i added up all of my receipts, gave them to the adjuster, and the blue book value of my car including all of the money that i put into it came out to be about $12k.
now if there is another say $2.5k of damage, which is very possible i would be very close to that 75% value that geico put on my car.
this is a 95 accord with high miles and a low mile drivetrain. i am beginning to think that maybe its not worth it or safe to repair and ill just accept another $2k or so from geico and call it a day. try to swap out the wheels and draw the rest off as a loss.
i mean with another $2k i would be at about $7,250 for an H22 accord which really is pretty fair, plus if i can do a quick switch on my regas, i can probably sell them for 1k or 1.2k im sure. anyways, with 7 or 8 thousand i can put in another 4 or 5 k from my savings and get something pretty nice to be honest.
so this is my dilemma. if it comes down to it, its gonna be tough to let this car go with all of the work that i put into it, then again its an almost 13 year old car so maybe its time for something new.
what do you guys think??

but the thing is i have to place to really store an H22 and all of the other shit on my car. maybe i can buy it back as a totaled car from geico for $1k and let people come and pick stuff off of it?? i dunno.. i know i can sell the H22 and tranny for about $2k..
this is what makes it such a difficult situation.

i guess. what do i do with the frame though?? just junk it somewhere i guess??
i guess it can sit in my driveway for now. i mean, it would be stupid to throw a perfectly good H22 swap in the junkyard.

i dunno.. i have mixed feelings about all of this. part of me loves this car and wants to keep it forever and continue working on it, and the other part of me is excited to get into something new and different.

you want my opinion? Kind of the reason i got the DC5.
I was tired of working on an older car. When you change something, something always goes wrong. I did the read disc conversion, took it to get aligned and they told me i had a bent trailing arm. I got pissed and decided to buy something new with no problems. Im happy with the car, but im not happy with the payments. The civic sat for about a year, i drove it every once in a while with the bent arm, and then finally got a new trailing arm for it, threw it on and drove it daily for 6-8 months.
I love both cars, but i just hate making monthly payments of that amount. despite the awesome condition, the car has lost alot of its value, and there is no way i will get close to what i owe on it. Your situation is different because more than likely whatever you buy will be paid off. Change is always good. You'll always miss something you put alot of time and energy into, but is it worth the problems that come with a car that old?
