Neon Genesis Evangelion
I did multiple searches but could find a thread directly related to the TV series (there at least one each for the movies Death/Rebirth an the upcoming live action films).
Anyhow...

it was a good show...just not god's gift to anime that fanboys like to make it out to be. They all try to tie some deep psycological and philosophical allusions. all i saw was that the story was just vague and made the watcher have to fill in the blanks (which in itself is not a bad thing, just at points in NGE it becomes a chore)

It's a badass show but the end was kinda convoluted and confusing but up until that point it was a kickass show.

When it was originally being aired it was handsdown the #1 hit. Newtype couldn't get enough pages about Eva in their magazine. I remember the months leading up to the 1st broadcast it was Eva > all, and nobody had seen an episode yet.
Dang I remember having to wait for days to get my name on list to rent the VHS episodes as they came available here in the US. Usually my store would get their rental copies out a couple days after the Japanese broadcast and have 5-10 copies. I'd still need to wait up to 2 weeks to see what happened to Shinji, Asuka, etc.
That was in the infancy of the internet and pre-DVD days.

very good series just the ending was like err awkward. Kind of left me like WTF, and that really pissed me off.

The plug suits were tres chic for that period of time!
I still wish they explained the purpose of the Angels and such a little better. That "super science" mumbo-jumbo got mind bending at times.

I can dig what you're saying. Especially since the storyline was pretty complicated.
But for a broadcast anime show... I can't really think of anything up to that point in time that could compare to it as a total package: Anime quality, vocal talent, musical score, intensity of the storyline, etc.
Macross was good but was about a decade before. Maybe that could compare in it's own time and place in broadcast TV anime history.
Can anybody think of anything else?

Cowboy Bebop? Trinity Blood is newer but its absolutely awesome in Japanese, the english dubs ruin it. Advent Children had all those same qualities that you mentioned but is newer as well. But Bebop was about the same in that time period.
