i'm considering buying a 2000 accord v6 2dr coupe for a nice price ($6.4k)...the drawback is that it's got 152k miles on it. other than that, everything looks great.
so the clear tradeoff is that i'd get this great car for a sweet price, with the risk that major repairs may be needed sometime soon. however, i don't know enough about the accord v6 or the expected reliability. any advice? would you do it?
high mileage isn't an issue as long as you know the car hasn't been beat on. to be safe, try to peak in the oil fill cap and make sure the valves aren't black or gunky(lack of oil changes). typlically these valves need VERY little adjustment if it was taken care of.
you can pull the front valve cover off if you can't see.
the engine is solid, the tranny is questionable. take the vin # to your local honda dealer for a check on open recalls, looking for 02-062 or 98-061, hoping one of them was completed!
those recalls are for the tranny, complete replacement free of charge. only good for 7rs/100,000mi though. so....if it was done, at least you can put that headache in the back of your mind for a while.
the EASIEST way to see if it was done is get on your back and slide under the radiator. if you see a small cylindrical filter on the suction line of the trans cooler(located in the lower tank of the radiator) then it was replaced under warranty at some time.
another hot spot is the CAT. This thing will drop dead without any warning what-so-ever. dealer cost is about $1300 parts and labor, but DIY'ers can get a honda cat off ebay for only $400, no heat shields/gaskets/nuts though.
another consistant problem i see at the dealer is the EGR valve/ports. there was a recall but your mileage is too high for it now. if you know your way around the engine cleaning the egr port will be easy.
Finally, check on the history and see if the timing belt/water pump was done. if it's original 152k is pushing it. we only see the t-belt breaking from high mileage, and not old age typically. it's a good $1300 repair at the dealer.
the car is solid, stock exhaust system have yet to even RUST from 98+ accords v6 or L4. honda highly increased the quality of the metal used in the exhaust system from the 94-97 model. but will you stay stock? lol
i just bought a 00 accord lx v6 for $7k out the door. this lady towed it in, car sat for 2+yrs. it was her uncles, a 90+yr old man!!! the kicker---7,799miles!!!!
new battery, programmed the keys, BAM! fires right up. renewed coolant, brake fluid, 3x trans flush, oil change, brake service and i'm good to go!

i got my 99 ex coupe for 8.5 i think, 60k miles, considering kbb was 10.5 when i bought it i think i did good.
anyways, most accords are awsome cars, but you can get stuck with a lemon. definatly find out what repairs have been done on the car, high mileage isnt really an issue, but just to help you try to talk him down because of the high mileage. good luck man

AV6's are notorius for bad trannies, i would stay away from the car if I were you. Its not worth the aggrevation. Just do a search on this forum and other Accord sites to see how many guys have tranny problems. It may have been replaced, but with the miles that are on it, your probubly outof extended warrenty for the tranny. Beware and cautious before buying it.
i bought my 99 2dr v6 accord a year ago with 147k miles i think....
since then i've had to replace an o2 sensor, pads, rotors, tires, and an axle. it sounds like a lot, and it does add up, but at least the tranny and motor are still going. i have 162k miles on it now btw. i drive too much :-/
it's like any other car, just have it checked out, run a carfax, etc. i would imagine it's fine, BUT that's 30k/year put on that car. quite a bit of driving.

right now im trying to get a car in the east coast. all used cars in the east coast seem to have high mileage.
An advice to everyone who is considering to get a 6th gen AV6. I just got mine few months back and I am so regret because I didnt pay enough attention to the tranny when I test drive it. Now it shifts like crab into 2nd gear. I think the problem is there even before I bought the car.
7th gen accord is very solid. make sure you check the trans condition first. 03 and 04 accord v6s had a transmission update to help prevent 2nd gear overheating.
make sure the update was done. check the trans fill plug to see if it has a funny adapter going staight through it. if it doesn, the update was done.
