personally, i feel this engine is ROCK SOLID! as long as it was not neglected(i mean lack of oil changes) you shouldn't have any problems.

there are no common engine failures, head gasket failures or piston/cam problems.

the only common coolant leak is the connecting pipe between the two heads above the transmission, but even that is rare and just seepage.

other common problem is egr clogging, but that is simple enough to repair.

assuming the transmission issue is known to you, the engine will outlast the body easily.

I have a 2000 Accord V6 with 84K miles. My check engine light has been on for a few months, car runs fine. I took it to pep boys for service(I know, what a mistake), they gave me a $1K bill after diagnosing that it is the EGR valve needs to be replaced. along with the EGR Valve this is the laundry list they gave:

1. Drill out and clean carbon! Seems like B.S. to me. Is it?
2. EGR Valve replace & repair
3. R&R intake mainfold gasket
4. Fuel plenum gaskety

I read in your previous post it's easy to clean the EGR valve. Would it be better to replace? ANd if so are there directions soemwhere online on how to replace EGR Valve or clean it as you state in the previous post?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

to replace the egr valve and drill the carbon out?

holy smokes...

the intake plenum gasket is reuseable.
the ?fuel plenum? gasket isn't touched.
the egr valve doesn't NEED replacement, but according to honda in the sb we replace it.
the egr port must been cleaned out. this is what is meant by drilling out the carbon. however, drilling it out isn't enough for a long lasting repair. after we drill it out we install a steel sleeve to resist carbon build up.

we would charge 2.0 labor plus the part(unsure of cost) so the total bill would be around $300-$350ish depending on the dealer.

if you want instructions on how to do it yourself i'll post a pdf. the problem is you don't have access to the special drill bit needed for the aluminum plenum. we just had a client bring one it to have it drilled though, and didn't charge a dime.

Before they came out with the bulletin we just hogged em out with a 3/8" drill. I personally dont think the steel sleeve does a whole lot, seen so many of em clog back up.

THey said they would replace the EGR valve and drill out the carbon. Could have meant drill out the carbon elsewhere? Or is the EGR valve basically the only place where the carbon deposits in excess?

could you provide the PDF? If I can't figure that out I'll probably just take it to my Honda dealer.

Thanks,
