Comptech Icebox/AEM CAI

I'm debating which one I'd like to buy. Keeping price out of the discussion, what do you guys think? Like v00tecsi already told me, the AEM has the hump between 4-5k and Comptech does not, but any other pros/cons between either? Also, I'm told Comptech is quieter than AEM.. Anyone know from personal experience?? I'm hoping AF22 reads this, as he has the Icebox

The Comptech is just a bit louder than the stock air box. Also with the Comptech, you will not have to worry about sucking up water. I only wish that Comptech would use a k & n filter instead of the foam. But I heard it is less restrictive than the k & n... It is recommended that you clean the foam filter every other oil change... and there is the other advantage. Instead of taking off the bumper to get to the k & n filter, just pop the hood and open the box and there is the filter. Hope this helps.

No the hump I'm talking about with the AEM, and the injen for that matter is the power spike between 4-5k RPM. You can really feel it once you add the 4-2-1 header.

The short rams aren't going to have this "spike" however, the short rams will provide more top end power over the cold air.

Only problem with the short ram is that when the bay temps are high, you loose the power due to the warm air being sucked in.
Now the ice box SHOULD fix that problem being that it is taking the air from behind the head light. Hydo lock is also not a concern with the ice box, however price is!!!

The cold air will provide you with a little more low end, which IMO is much needed in the Si (some say we don't have much anyway so who cares) but the little bit it gives you down low is just enough to allow you to have decent pick up in a top gear at a lower RPM. It also helps with climbing hills without having to downshift.

You can now pick up an AEM CAI pretty cheap. I got mine from www.coximport.com They ship free too

As far as the down sides to the aem cai is that you due have the chance of sucking up water (which you have to be in some deep shit to hydro lock...I have driven in 6 hour down pours, and my car is fine)
Also another down side to me anyway is that sometimes its just too loud. I feel like if I have someone in my car besides a friend, I don;t want to get on it because when it hits VTEC it sounds like my car is going to blow up

Over all I am VERY happy with my AEM CAI!!!

Like you know with just that on my car, I ran a 15.53!!!

However, if I could do it again I may have something else.

I started out with an AEM cai and I didn't like the sound (Vtec range). At times I noticed that the car wasn't accelerating as quickly so I sold it and went back to stock then I came upon the Icebox and couldn't be more satisfied. The Icebox also produces a distinct humming sound. Really sweet piece of equipment.

v00tecsi:
Comptech actually does pickup from the same spot as the AEM does (right behind the foglight).

Also, I know EXACTLY what you mean about the loudness factor with strangers in the car, hahah.. I used to be that way with my old EX when I had the AEM CAI on it..

Sam:
Thanks for the info.. One question though - how is the sound withOUT the icebox, when you're just running the short ram? Or have you not had it setup that way before? Just curious..

Thanks a lot to everyone though..

The comptech shortram is IDENTICAL to the AEM shortram in sound/driveability. I had the AEM shortram before, i think the diameter between to two pipes are alittle diffrent.

Now with the icebox on, it sounds similiar to stock as in the noises it makes, no roaring pumping noise like the aem. I'd say the icebox is about 15% louder then stock. But note that you can run the icebox without teh top cover, with out teh top cover it sounds like a refined AEM intake while suckign up engine bay air but also havign cold air forced in.

97CIVICoupe: Comptech does pick up in a similair area the AEM does, but the comptech tube bends right and then up, there 3 90 degree bends it until it reaches the filter. Thus it will not suck up water at 10 times the engine suction, but it is possible but improbably that water be forced up teh tube. ( i've driven through puddles that felt like it was goign to rip my bumper off with no problems )

This is the air horn the comptech picks up air from, and yes, drivign on teh highway makes my airfilter dirty real fast... My filter turns black on the bottom, but easily fixed with teh comptech filter cleaner.

AF22.. awesome! :

I think I may end up going with Comptech. I'll probably buy the short ram first, and then a little later I'll buy the icebox for it.

Even if you don't have foglights, it still wouldn't get all that much air unless you cut out the duct like AF22 did.. Well, it'd get air, but I guess it'd get more if you cut the duct out..

Good thing it's sub-freezing here and it's only January, haha.. I should be able to have the icebox by summer.

The bottom portion of the air duct for the icebox is adjustable so my icebox gets air in the opposite direction. Let me snap a pic of what I'm referring to. Peace guys.
