No power even when VTEC kicks in

I have just bought a civic sir (B16A) and am having a bit of trouble with it. When the engine has been driven for about 20 minutes its fine, but then the power becomes intermitent. This power loss is all through the revs including VTEC, for example if I was to floor it in second gear there would be very little power but third gear would then eccelerate better. I think that it might be a faulty sensor because it comes and goes, its really annoying and dangerous when overtaking. Has anyone had this problem before and know how to fix it, I would really appreciate it. Help me get a smilley

Def on the oil

Yea i would definately check the oil. On my boys gsr the accerleration was all goofy due to the low oil and i found most of the oil in the exhaust. we had to rebuild his engine.
