if your asking about the sound it comes from the air being pulled into the intake. And the different tone u hear when the vtec kicks in is just that much more air being sucked in like a vaccum. Just like how your exhaust works but in reverse.
Yeah, I think is just air rushing into the filter, up the pipe, into the throttle body. The sucking sounds gets real loud and there is a pronounced growl, from the air, I don't really think it is the motor.

The main sound difference you hear is not the vtec itself, but a byproduct of it kicking in. When it kicks in your engine needs more air so the sound that you hear when it kicks in is actually you intake sucking in even more air than before.
Mods: AEM CAI, 3" Thermal Cat Back w/ Test Pipe... Waiting for money for BOOST!
The sound you are hearing is because of the valve overlap... for just a fraction of a second, both the intake and exhaust valves are open during the high lift / duration of VTEC. The reason it gets so much louder with the AEM CAI is because the AEM it is just a tube without all of the baffles and other sound deadening bs characteristics of the stock intake system.
I love that sound... (Weeping)
