Question Question about turbo

thinking of going turbo soon...maybe in the next few months or so...in the meantime i'll be doing some research on what turbo kit best suits my needs as a daily driver. im looking for a kit that will give me alot of punch while using stock engine internals. im sorta leaning towards the greddy turbo and am planning on only boosting 7-9 psi. if any of you all out there have better suggestions please let me know. as for now, im really considering the greddy or the drag III but leaning more towards the greddy.

Take a good look at the revhard kit. It is a high quality kit that costs about the same as the greddy SI kit.

Believe it or not, but picking the turbo is the easy part. You will have to REALLY do your homework when it comes to fuel management.

GReddy Drag III, and Rev Hard all make very nice turbo kits. However, IMHO if you are going to leave you internals stock than get the GReddy turbo kit. The TD05H-18G turbo in the GReddy kit is smaller than the T3/T4 turbo in the Drag III kit or the T3/TD04E turbo in the Rev Hard kit. A smaller turbo means less turbo lag, which is what you want in a daily driver. The GReddy kit also comes with new 320cc fuel injectors and FCU. The FCU (or 'blue box' as it is offten called) wires into your ECU and contains all the fuel and boost maps.

Don't forget to check out the Turbocharger forum on SHO, lots of good info there.

I did some research on turbos for my car, and maybe I can help. If you are going for a daily driver, most ppl that I have talked to say just go with the greddy. One reason is because there is less stress on the engine, there for not needing the internals upgraded. Turbonetics has some nice turbos, the T3/T04 is great for the B16a engine. The fall back of that is, you would really need to build the engine. Before you look into a turbo you should set a goal, how much hp do you want and how are you going to drive the car. Just remember to really look hard into this, a lot of ppl will just sell you the turbo. Then down the road you have not engine, and others places will warn you. Which is how I know that if you go any bigger than a greddy turbo, you might as well build the motor. I hope that helps!

Just to clarify, one turbo isn't going to stress your engine any more than another. So the revhard t3/t4 won't stress it any more than the greddy turbo. The deciding factor is how much boost you want to run or how much power you are trying to make.

The t3/t4 is a larger turbo than the greddy unit, and can potentially make more boost if you want (and more power, this is where the additional stress comes from). Since the greddy unit is smaller, it will start making boost sooner which is usually want you want in a daily driver.

However there is nothing to prevent you from running low boost levels on a t3/t4, however since it is a larger turbo, it may not spool as quickly as the greddy unit.

I've been doing a lot reasearch recently for I also intend to go turbo by the end of the year. What Kommon_Sense said is correct, many ppl think bigger turbos are less reliable, that is not so, like anything you do to a car - it depends on how well you tune it and maintain it. You could pretty much slap on the GReddy kit and with minimal mods additional to it, tune it and get it running. However, although it take much more patience and money with a larger kit like Rev Hard, Drag 3, FMAX, and much more preparation plus hours tunning, this will yield one helluva beast of a b16a2. [Should definitely get you into 13s easily without much of a headache...MatT3T4 had his bottom end fully built fo his b16a2 with a RH-Stage 2 kit to support 400 WHP, no typo]

Furthermore, you are not going to be content with the GReddy gains. Granted it was 5-6lbs of boost, I rode in someone's GReddy Si turbo, my exact car, with 5-6lbs of boost extra; nada, nothing, didn't impress me AT ALL. Course he never really went over 60mph (we were in a parking lot), but seriously and I don't know if he didn't tune it correctly or what not, it seemed like a waste of 2gs.

Trust me, I was going to go SC because I couldn't be bothered to learn Turbo, and didn't want the hassle, but I was convinced to do so, seeing that I knew that I would prolly be happy for 3 months tops, before I would have needed more speed...Car would be getting old by then, and can't afford to re-route myself to TC again, so I decided to go straight to TCing =) Just do more hwk, hang around various Turbo forums and get some ideas, Hon davison.com is an excellent place for informative tech talk, all the intelligent SHO ppl moved there

Plus there's a BOV, you can't beat that!

The basic GReddy kit does 5-6 psi, but if you get the intercooler and BOV it runs at 8 psi (of course it is no longer CARB legal). 8psi with a TD05H-18G turbo is the same a 8psi with a T3/T4 turbo. Boost is boost no matter which turbo you use, the only difference is the added lag with a larger turbo. I recommend the GReddy kit for a daily driver with stock internals. However, if you think you might build the engine in the future to handle more boost, your would be better off with a Rev Hard or Drag 3 kit.

Thanks 2000 EBP Si. I think I will go with the Greddy and with intercoller and BOV as I am only planning to keep my engine internals stock. I only plan to boost between 6-8psi anyways. I also will only be using my car as a daily driver.
