Rev limiter
Hi guys, new user here. Have had the 07 Si for exactly a year now. Bought it last year on Nov. 30th.
I recently got into racing etc.... for about 3 months I've been racing cars here and there. Been practicing launching etc.
I noticed that when I rev my engine to launch it's limited at 5500 RPM.
A friend of mine told me that there is something called governor chip or something in my car.
He said I can take it out and replace it with an ECU chip.
I was also told that just taking out the governor will up my top speed and acceleration.
I have tried many times going above 132mph but have failed all the time. So it looks like that my car's max speed is around 132.
I was at 132 for about 5 minutes each of the times.... it went down then up to 132 but never past it.
I was stupid enough to race my friend's STI... got owned badly.
Any help would be appretiated, I want to beat his car badly. I know that isn't possible unless I get stuff like turbo, headers, exhaust etc.... but atleast I would like to give him a run on highways.
Thanks a lot.

Yeah, like I said I was being stupid.
When I reread my above post I noticed that the way I mis explained reving past 5500.... I don't want to do that. I just want to know why it is limited.
I know that reving past certain points is bad for the engine etc. I was trying to acquire about the governor chip and what it does.

Are you trying to say that you rev to 5500 before you launch and want to change it so you can red line before you launch?
Because if that is what you are saying, please don't change anything.
The rev limit in neutral is making sure idiots don't rev super high in neutral and damage the engine. There is no need to rev past more than 3 or 4 grand in neutral to get a good launch. Anything above 3.5 in my opinion just causes an ass load of wheelspin.
There is no need to be a ricer and rev the shit out of your engine in neutral, it's just gay and does nothing.
And yes, your car is limited to 132, but if your doing that on public roads, your car should be limited to 100 to prevent you from doing such dumb things. And if you do remove the speed governor, don't expect the Si to go a whole lot faster, it will prob. top out around 140ish is my guess, but I ask again, even at a track, when the hell are you going to use that? It's just a waste of money to do anything with this stuff. Leave your ECU alone and drive properly and normally and you'll be fine.

I said in my above post that I know that it would damage engine. I just wanted to know why it was rev limited. Now I know.
The max RPM that I've launched at was 4500 cause I was trying to find the best RPM to launch at.
For me it's around 3500-4000.
So you're saying that taking out the governor will only up my top speed and not my acceleration?

there is a difference between a speed governor and a rev limiter. which are you removing?

I thought there was only one.
I am not planning on removing anything. I wanted to know what it'd do if I did.
Speed governor is obvious that it'd increase max speed.
And rev limiter will let me rev past 5500 in neutral, which is not needed.... unless it does something else.

Rev limiter regardless of what it does in neutral you'll want to leave in so you don't over rev in other gears.
Speed limiter will make the top end higher, but I don't think it reduces acceleration. Maybe once you start hitting near the cars top end, there will be some loss of accel, but when do you ever have to go more than 120mph, even on a track?

you won't gain anything launchng past that rpm. you have a fwd car, you'll just spin out. you should slip the cluch just beneath to get a good launch. why are you even thinking of removing the rev limiter. you don't have a built/tuned motor or suspension.

I asked because couple ppl were telling me to remove it. They said it'll make acceleration faster.
I thought I'd join a honda forum and ask before doing anything.
Thanks again for all the help guys.

^^^^^No problem. Leave your limiter and govonor in place, there put there for a reason. Unless you really start building the motor, there is no need to remove such things.
