RPM redline danger (99Si)

I have a 99 Si and last night an idiot in a cobalt LS started to rev me on my way home from work. Of course, being a speed junkie, I played with him for a couple of miles. Well, I was rolling in 4th, downshifted to 2nd to get some power of course, and like an idiot, wasnt paying attention and went past the redline before I shifted to 3rd. How bad is it for the car to do that once? I just hope I didnt do any long term engine damage. Thanks.

have you taken the rev limiter off?

if it sounds good (no knocks or anything) you didnt hurt anything, just be careful.

Oh don't worry bro. It's normal. I have a 00 si bone stock. One day i was messin around too and i was in second, and i also took it past the redline (8000 that is). I was worried like you. I thought the previous owner had taken the rev limiter off.

But The rev limiter kicks in just before 8300. So, its ok to shft @ 8100 or 8200. If you dont beleive me u can try it, i gurantee u it wont go pass 8400k and if you don't do it often, it won't hurt your engine at all cause the rev limiter will protect your pistons from flying out.

Remeber as you hit rev limiter don't keep gasin like a idot quick shift bro and churp those front wheels as you go into second. People always hit revlimiter when racing, but it's always better tryin shifting just before hitting the limiter.

I gotta say, thats the best news Ive heard all day. I was so worried that I did some long term damage. You know whats its like to get that adrenaline pumping in you when someone is revving you on the streets. I just had to get on it and I just didnt think to look until it was too late. But again, thanks for the advice and reassurance. If you ever got any questions about the 99-00 Si's, you can ask me and I will help. Like I said, Ive only had mine for about 4 months and Im absolutely in love with. Thats all I spend my money on. lol. Take it easy man.

No problem man. Since you put it this way i do need some help. Like i said i just had this civic for a month and i love it to death. The first owner took good care of it as he was in his mid 30's. But today i ran into a prob and created a post under the si forum, see if u can help me out...thnx P.S. i know for a fact that i didn't break the mount.

you revved past the 8k redline and thought that was bad? You will be fine man. I was driving my civic si once and dropped it from high 3rd (about 7.2k) into 2nd by accident and the rpms shot up like crazy. buried the needle at 9k. but that was the only time that happened and the car was fine. just be careful out there.

LoL revving past 8k 24/7 is what the b16 was built for.

Yea, and you guys don't need to worry about it going 100, 200, 300, or even 400rpm above redline. Once the tach gets that high, almost every tach is off by 100-500rpm. As long as you haven't messed with the ECU yet, everytime you hit the limiter, the engine is at the vehicle's actual redline, not what is says on your tach. So actually, if you're racing on the strip, you know that your real redline is what appears to be 8400 (or however high your tach reads before the limiter)....so take it there

My redline is set at 7500rpm on my tune and I trust it. I enjoy taking it to 7900-8000 on the tach all the time, plus I like seeing the look on my friends' faces when my needle dips 1000rpm below the red......er...hearing their reaction....I don't look away from the tach at 8000rpm

I read a story about someone draining the oil from a B16 on it's last legs, and blocking the throttle and letting it run at 10k rpms with no oil in it. Lasted 1.5 hour before seizing .
