SI Vtec not kicking in.....
OK so i just bought a Si it's been well maintained it's got 138K miles on it Highway miles not in town, it's never been modded, stock intake stock exhaust etc....i thought that the vtec wasn't kicking in i couldn't really tell because my other car (turbo LS) is non vtec, so i didn't know what to expect. The oil was a lil low, so i topped it off, still didn't feel right, so i read on here and checked my solenoid...it was spotless (to my relief, this means the car has had regular maintnence on it) ran a wire to a 6v source and it clicks so it's good, no check engine lights, am i just expecting too much out of it being that it's stock.....thanks for all your help guys.

88-91? 92-95? 99-00? 02-05? 06-08?
There are many generations of Si. Some without Vtec and some without "real vtec" because, apparently Honda gave the 02-05 Si some imaginary Vtec or something like that.
I don't know much about vtec either except that my Civic doesn't have it and that it has to do with changing camshafts or lobes or something mechanical... there's a sticky about that somewhere but, as for the original question, the model year will help the Civic gurus figure out the issue.

look im not being a smart ass either, but i know my cars and im not a dumbass.....lol this isn't my first honda, and im 10000000000% sure it's a true SI #1 it's a B16a2 and #2 when u run the vin number it says si and #3 it says this on the title 2, it's not a look alike, or a conversion lol i wouldn't have bought it if it was, but im just trying to make sure the vtec is working, the solenoid works, we tested it, it's clean as a whistle, but this is my #1st car with VTEC so im a newbie and in training lol......

on some cars you just cant hear it kick in. on my brothers integra i didn't really hear the vtec come on but on my si (2000) its loud.
i guess it all depends on how smooth the cross over is.

I find that vtec is very tempermintal or in my case it is.... If it's cold and she's nice and warmed up it will scream!! But if it's not so cold but not hot, can't really hear the crossover as much, and sometimes when it's hot outside, it will scream and sometimes you can't hear it... So in my cases it's the day of teh week if i can hear it crossover or not haha

I would first change the oil, Even though you topped it off change it. Plus the VTEC wont engage when its cold only when it at normal running temp. And yes regardless if its stock or not you should be able to hear/feel the difference.

You wuld hear it. Like eye said, when its cold sometimes it doesnt go on. Vtec has a mind of its own and it'll turn on when it wants to and wont when it deosnt.
