Angry Tranny issues....

I just got back from the shop and was told I needed an input shaft bearing. I went there assuming I needed a belt or pulley. The car makes a whining screeching sound coming from the belt area. So now the tranny needs to be dropped and I should have them do the clutch too. What is a good clutch to get? Also if anyone has heard of this prob before how much longer can I drive the car before it breaks?

act makes a good clutch... my motto with parts that are wearing or are broken already is fix them as fast as possible because they will break down when you least expect it...

The main (input) shaft bearings support the main shaft in the tranny. There are two bearings, one on either side of the shaft. How often does it make noise? If you push the clutch pedal down, does the noise stop?

How well do you trust this shop? Personally, I'd have another shop check it out too. Lotta time and $$$ to replace these bearings.

They are number 1 and number 23 in the pic. 23 is the clutch side of the main shaft.

The noise sounds like a jet enginge whining. Also the noise goes away when I push the clutch in. Weird thing about is that sometimes it doesnt make any noise at all. The part I looked up is like 25 bucks. So its the labor thats gonna hurt and the clutch. I am also wondering if I should have the synchros done too? Is that expensive?

yeah the synchros are a big job...I mean if they're gone and you have the tranny off, you mine as well, but it is a bigger job then just a throw out bearing or clutch. It actually requires you to open the tranny.

I think a lot of people are just intimidated by transmissions.. If you actually opened one up, you'd be surprised - they're really not that bad..
