I sometimes have trouble getting my 99 Si into 1st gear and reverse. It doesn't happen all the time, but at least several times a day I have to play with it to get it into 1st or reverse. I thought I read somewhere that this was common with the Si. Does anyone else have this problem and what can be done to fix it? Would new shifter bushings help?
1. Do not jam your car into 1st while it is still moving. This is bad for the synchronizer. Come to a complete stop first.
2. Before selecting Reverse, make sure you come to a complete stop. Move the shifter into a forward gear (such as 1st or 4th) to stop the input and output shafts from turning, and then select Reverse.
No, I mean this is when I'm at a complete stop that it does this. Like sometimes when I'm at a red light and try to shift into first it doesn't want to go into gear. It usually takes a couple of tries. Same thing with reverse. The car is not moving at all when I'm having the problem.
When my Civic refuses to let me into 1st, I stick it in neutral, let the clutch out briefly to spin the tranny input shaft, and then put the clutch back in and it will let me slip it into gear.
try 2nd gear then put in 1st.
have you tried changing the tranny fluid...or maybe try
a different brand.
bushing wont do anything to help you get in gear. it will give you a better feel of shifter but thats about it. and since your car is a 99 your stock bushings are probably still in great shape.
just my 2 cents.

Mi 99 is having trubble getting into reverse too.
I tried changeing the Trans axle fluid with no improovement.
the shift linkage was good. The good Honda Mech near me said
I would have to drop the tranny to find what's wrong.
He told me to shift it into first before going into reverse.
He says it lines up the syncro's or something.
It works sometimes, but rev is still sticky.
At this point I am getting ready to doo the tranny.
If I have to drop that bugger I'm putting good parts in it one time.
Clutch, fly Wheel, and LSD.
yeah i get the same problem...i just put in in N, than rev it a bit like to 2k and then put it in R or 1st. It works.

Whell I never dropped the tranny.
what I did was change the tranny fluid.
And always shifted back the 2nd and 1st. before going to reverse.
It all cleared up.
I don't understand the intracys of tranny gearing; so I just down shifted threw the gears.

normally after im parked for awhile in my 93 si itll do the same thing. i just throw it into reverse let off the clutch a little and let it move then throw it in to first. thats the trick. idk whats wrong with it but whatever. idk my clutch is going but that wouldnt be it.
Never dropped a tranny either. I have an accord 5 spd with 175,000 on it, STOCK clutch disk! Anyway, I just ease the clutch out a TAD as I am pushing it into gear when it does this. Mine almost always does this for reverse. I dont think there is really anything wrong with a car that does that. Iv had other domestic manuals that did that as well.
Same happens to me. Just put it in neutral and then let the clutch out quick. Then try again, usually works for me. It doesn't bother me anywhere near as much as it sounds.
