Battery CCA

So, I've looked but maybe not looked hard enough to find my exact answers. I'm wondering what would cause a batteries CCA to drop. For example, if it's rated at 550 CCA, and you test it at and it shows 225 CCA for example, what's it caused by? Extreme temparatures? Inactivity?
