Since there are no SQ competitions in the Bay Area anytime soon, I decided to enter dbDrag last weekend and manage to rack a legal 140.5 db in the lanes with 1 12" ID Max and 900 watts in a 1.38 cf sealed box in the trunk. It was an all SPL competition and I was going against some pretty tough competitors in Street 1-2 class.
140.5 db isn't spectacular but I manage to beat a guy with 2 15's. The next SQ comp is in October in the Bay Area, so it'll be a while before I can compete with my setup.

What format will that SQ comp be in? I may have the system in by then!!
Sup rcurley. It's organized by USACi and it'll be at the Santa Clara fairgrounds. Not sure how it's going to be set up but you can get more info from their site.
I would have been in fremont, but I had a bachelor party to attend. Can you give me some more info on how you hit 140 in the trunk? Amp? Install, etc would be nice. I would love to hit that with my max and 1kW
Hey rcurley. I basically built a sealed 1.38 cf enclosure with the Max inverted facing back powered by an Arc 1500D-R at about 900 watts at 4 ohms mono. The amp hasn't kicked in 1 ohm stereo yet, and according to Eric at Arc, he says even though my sub is wired at 2 ohms, the enclosure affects the final impedance.
I braced the box the pretty well and set up my amp with the subsonic filter on. I'm not sure on the peak, but I pretty much played 45hz to 55hz test tones during my 30 second metering.
well its not a guarantee, there are a few variables to consider.
for 1, preout voltage strength from your headunit. If its less than his, it might result in lower db, if its stronger, it might give u more.
woofer orientation, the way the woofer is aiming will also affect how waves couple up and re-enforce each other. remember , vestax's woofer is inverted mounted, and if put in a regular box, that might translate to a higher db. Amp stability at full output- sometimes, as amps output full power, current draw will exceed alternator output, and thus result in voltage drops. Depending on how well your amps handle voltage drops, the drops might affect the power output to the subs. Dampening- reducing vibrations in your car and dampening it will result in less sound energy wasted which can translate into higher spl. Box size- different alignments will yeild different peaks or drops in freq response, usually, the small the box, the less low end, and more power required for it to reach a certain volume. the larger the box, the more efficient a woofer will be. Using different sized boxes will also impact your car. There might be a few other factors, but these are some that I can think of for now.

just to let u know in street 1-2 the biggist woofe u can use is 12".
thats not to shabby for a seal idmax, now u should try port it and see what she will do

Thanks for the comment. Dingaling and I were about to port it but he ended up going to another event down in Los Angeles and I didn't have enough time to make another box. Probably next time I'll build a ported box if I ever enter another SPL event.
Oh, BTW, yeah I know 12" is the limit, but in the event they just metered whoever regardless what class you were in. I believe the guy next to me was in Super Street 1-2.
damm dude, that's a clean looking trunk. I would mount the sub the regular way though. I think mounting it backwards works better if you have some outrageous install. Have you considered covering up the sound deadening material up on the trunk lid? check my link for pics.
I got a question for the rest of you guys though, what is the IDEAL, BEST, LOUDEST and way to run 1 IDMAX 12? I mean I want to know the wattage and size of box and angle to put it at in the trunk. I would like some major details here fellas, can you hook a brotha up with some info?
