I have heard....

If you buy better speakers but you keep the stock HU it will not sound better or even worse than the stock speakers? Is this true?

I've never put aftermarket speakers on a stock HU, so I'm not sure. But I do know there are products on the market that will make your stock HU produce clearer/crisper sound. Check Crutchfield.com or one of their catalogs. Aftermarket speakers that require more power than your HU produces may degrade the sound quality somewhat, but if you add an aftermarket amplifier as well as something to clean up the signal coming from the HU you should be ok...
