kind of a silly question
different cars will have different sounds but not enough to really tell what sub sounds best for each car
if the 12 inch infinity kappas didnt sound too good it was most likely the setup, those are decent sounding subs
why not tell us what you're looking for in a sub

i had a 94' hatchback, i've had kicker in it. i've had 1 twelve, 2 twelve's and 2 15's in it. every setup has sounded good. i guess it depends if you want trunk space or not? with all of those, i didn't, but if it doesn't matter, then it depends on the amp you're using. go with quality, you can't go wrong there, but for what you have should be fine. what amp are you using? that may make a difference.
what kind of box are they in, what kind of amp do you have, and how much power. some of the simpler reasons it might sound like crap are the subs being out of phase, the amp being on high pass instead of low pass, the box being poorly constructed or of incorrect specs for those particular speakers
Its all gonna be based on the wiring, box quality, and how well the hatch is sealed. From there it all depends on how extreme you want to go. My 12"L7 with a 2000w amp bent my trunk lid after 2 days last fall.

just for some info dont be fooled with the watts. higher watts on a sub doesnt mean its going to hit harder. i just put a mtx competition amp in his impreza (its a 3000 watt amp) and we hooked up 2 800 watt subs and they hit harder than anything. just get a bad ass amp and some high quality wires and any subs u put in your car will sound great
The whole question is subjective. what sounds good to you, doesn't necessarily sound good to me, or anyone else. Generally tho, for bass its the box. sealed sounds best, and will result in a smaller box when designed for the same cutoff freq as a ported box. Ported box will usually be more "boomy" and a bit louder. Of course, it will also be dependent on the car....
