DIY suspension

I plan on installing my own neuspeed konis and coilover sleeves in my garage. How difficult would it be to do? And how long will it take with the help of a friend?

I plan on taking the shocks and springs out at home and having a local shop compress the springs, disassemble the stock shocks and reassemble the konis and coilovers sleeves. What will this cost me and what tools will I need than socket wrenches and a jack/stands?

shouldn't be too difficult, since its your first time it might take a few hours (2-4)if u using just hand tools and not air tools, might even take longer if things go wrong. Get some type of Liquid wrench and spray on your bolts so u dont struggle.

I have no idea how much a shop would charge u to compress your stockies.

hardest part of it is removing the old stuff. rusted and/or frozen bolts.

heh, took me like 2 days,
I did it completely on my own, and compressed/uncompressed the springs myself(rented a spring compressor for free from autozone).

It really is not tough, as in you definetely dont have to be a mechanic to do it.

its all just twisting bolts on and off(even the spring compressor is just twisting bolts on and off).
The only problem is that alot of these bolts can be a frigin pain in the ass.

Most noteably the one on the top of the stock shocks.
You have to hold the piston rod in place with a 5mm allen wrench. then take the bolt off with a regular wrench. so you need to either get some really good tools with long handles(for leverage)
or get a really BUFFED friend to do it for ya! luckly my brother lifts alot of weights, hahaha.
For some reason the rears were practicaly imovable. the fronts I could do myself though, and WATCH OUT THAT YOU DONT STRIP THE PISTON ROD! i stripped one and had to SAW thru the piston rod to get it off(screw it.. i'll just throw the stock shock away)

but yeah thats about it.
getting a shop to assemble the shock/springs would be really helpful, but I'd rather save abuck

Its not hard at all to do. Taking them to a shop should be simple, but it is easy enough to do yourself. Just make sure that you have a torque wrench and tighten things back to specification.

Thanks, peeps

I think I might just give it a try tomorrow. I need to re-check my toolbox to make sure I have everything and let you know how it turns out.

Well, I did'nt get a chance to do my suspension yet but I still have a couple of Q's. Did you guy have to use a vse in order to disassemble the stock shocks? I don't have one and don't want to buy one either seeing that I wont need it after this project. If not how did you do it? Oh yeah, do I need to compress the coilover sleeves to fit my Konis or should I just move the dual locking perches down enough to where I can reassemble the shock? Thanks in advance.

You don't exactly need a vice, but you need to get the collar off of the front stock shocks without bending the collar. Of course you could just go to the dealership and buy a new collar for the new shocks.

Then again, maybe not... looks like that part isn't sold separately. So yeah, you gotta get it off someway. Using a vice and a hammer is the easiest way. Of course you could just sit it on the ground and slowly tap the collar off with a hammer.

Well, It's done!

I installed my Neuspeed/Koni's and Ractive coilover sleeves(I know they suck, but they are temporary) last week Wed. and it wasn't too hard. It just took along time without air tools and someone to help. I decided to take the spring shock assemblies to a friend's shop to compress the old springs.

Driving impression? I can't really say right now because I also decided to get some new tires this week (Yok Avs Es 100s) and found that one of my wheels are cracked on the inside lip! So, now I'm riding on a 15"POS on the rear driver's side which Discount Tire Direct was nice enough to let me ride on for the time being. Anyway, they were able to hunt down another wheel for me. I was lucky too 'cause they are out of production.
So far, the ride IS bouncy but not like my Eibach sportlines on my 95' coupe. I'm sure it's because of the konis. When my wheel comes in next week, I'll give you a full review.

If the ride is bouncy try turning up the dampening on the konis. Sounds like you have them set at full soft and those ractive coils are probably pretty stiff.

Also, be sure to get an alignment.

Got an alignment already.
How much can I turn up the dampening without blowing the shocks?

just keep turning until it feels right. Go 1 full turn and see how that feels. It will probably be too firm but it will give you an idea of about where you want it and how it affects your ride quality.
