I'm goin to be puttin in a b18c1 motor in my 93 hatch and am wondering if theres much difference between USDM and JDM. I kno the JDM version has higher compression and hp but is there any advantages of one over the other?
I live in cali too...our rules for swaps are same year as the car or newer...if it follows that rule..no problems...just when you call the dmv tell them you are getting an engine change..half the people dont understand swap....and JDM....having access to all the JDM parts for the JDM engines....wayyy better.

dont argue w/ an idiot they'll bring you down to your level and beat you w/ experiance.
all jdm honda engines will not pass the visual when it comes to smog
1) a motor has to be made in the same year as the car or newer
2) it has to be an engine that as available in california (jdm motors will not pass the visual inspection w/ the refs, all jdm motors only have a 4 digit alphanumeric code, while the USDM motors will have 5. Ex...in the US, there's a difference between B16A2, and B16A3, but in japan...there is no third digit. Just B16, this shows the motor is from japanland

So then what do you do about smog since you're in California? Do you just get someone to sign it off for a little extra $$$?

its not that easy, because the they pay no attention to the valve cover (except to look for the breather hose), they look @ the code that's stamped on the block. If you want to make a jdm block look like a usdm, get the serial number and code stamped away, and have a new serial number and code stamed (instead of B16, get B16A2)

how do you get the old one stamped away? and then get a new one stamped on?
so if u say JDM motors only have 4 digits... ex. b16a would the GSR just say B18C?? What would the US version say?
In all honesty I think I can pass smog by going to some hole in the wall place.... theres plenty around here. I know my cousin swapped a b16 into his 91 hatch and he didn't have a problem passing smog. Those asian shops will do anything for cash.
so can anyone give me an estimate of what 1/4 mile times i might be hitting? B18c1 in a 93 dx hatchback. My friend is hitting 15.0 in his del sol w/ his b18c1. He's got all the basics i/h/e but my car will be stock for a lil while, so what times should i get w/ a stock b18c1 motor?
even with a stock motor you should be able to hit mid 14s with a B18C1 in a 93 hatch, with i/h/e you should be in the low 14s, that is if you're a good driver.
