type-r B18C5 SWAP GONE BAD.... use ls crank in c5 ????

Ok my cousing bought a c5 long block for his 95 LS. the guy that sold it to him said he just had the crank resurfaced and the bearings were brand new.

We installed it and decided to drive it without vtec for "break in"

after 800-900 easy miles the motor stated knocking.

Tonight I pulled the head off and pulled the pistons out along with the rods.

everything in the motor was immaculate except for the crank bearings. Most of them are grooved and scorched.

Tomorrow we'll go talk to the guy that sold the motor to him...

so here comes my QUESTION: my cousins b18b1 is immaculate. COULD WE USE THE CRANK OUT OF THE LS MOTOR AND PUT IT IN THE C5 BLOCK ???????

I KNOW THEY HAVE SLIGHTLY DIFF SPECS BUT I WAS JUST CURIOUS IF CLEARANCE ALLOWED US TO USE IT IN A C5.

ALSO WOULD USING AN LS CRANK IN A C5 GIVE HIM BETTER LOW END ??????? THE C5 FEELS LIKE A WIMP AT LOW RPM COMPARED TO THE B18B1

I'm in the same dilemma... The B1 crank will fit in the C5 block without a problem. You would need to use B1 rods instead of the C5 rods. The C5 rods are about 1mm longer than the B1 rods. B1 has longer stroke/short rods; C1/C5 have shorter stroke and long rods. I'd like to use the C1 rods with the B1 crank, but I dont know if there is enough Valve to Piston clearance. Anyone have any specs on the Ls/vtec's valve to piston clearance ??

I would use the same rods out of the C5, they are a lot stronger than the B1 rods. Don't worry about the extra length. Basically what you are going to get by using the crank from a B1 is you are going to increase your stroke a little, meaning that you are going to push a little more displacement and you are going to have a little bit higher compression. You shouldn't have any valve clearance issues as long as you aren't running too hot of cams. So just use the C5 rods and enjoy a little more HP...although I would get the B1 crank balanced so that you don't have to worry about it at high RPM's. The stock B1 crank isn't made to handle the revs of the C5 so by balancing it you won't have to worry about it holding up under the 9K rev load.

were also looking at a CRV block.......

If so, I'll have a bare C5 block FS and the rods and pistons as well...

.

How did you deduct that you wouldn't have any clearance issues ?? Where did you get your information from ?? It also would limit drasticly how much you could advance your intake or exhaust cams.

I wasn't refering to the stock B1 rods. I meant to use B1 size rods with the B1 crank. Everyone is looking to flame everyone on here anymore to I guess everything I write I have to spell out every detail...
