calling all hybrid buffs...

okay guys, i got a b16a2 block from a friend (obdII block from a newer SI), i was wondering if i could do the following:

can i use a 1st gen b16 a head on it since the 1st gen is pre obd?also i need to fit it into a 94 civic coupe ex...so, with that said and assuming the head fits, what wiring harness and ecu would i need?

please don't respond if you recommend me saving up for a complete swap or getting an lsvtec or gsr. i am not looking for opinions , i am looking for facts. will it work? how will it work? if it doesn't work, why not? i already have the block (free) and i can get a b16 head cheap. so as the post title reads, i am looking for hybrid buffs who are problem solvers and think outside the box, not opinions on what you would do...

thnks.

I am absolutely not a pro, but...

I just had a CR-Vtec swap done and it has a 2000 b16 head running OBD-I. So what I'm saying is that I don't think that the year of the acual head will determine which chip to run. I think its just the harness and wiring that determines it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would suspect that a newer head would flow a little better anyway. And I don't know of any problems fitting the b16 under your hood.

Sorry I don't know enough about the different ECU's to give a recommendation. All I know is you want an OBD-I vtec chip.

Lets get some pro's in here already.

thnks man

crvtec? does it feel as strong as everybody says it does?
on your swap, which harness did you use?

the reason i mentioned the 1st gen head is because i can find one very very cheap. if it works and i get the right harness, i just might be able to get this b16 swap in my car for less than $600. sure, a little bit of work, but i definitely think its worth it for that price.

I have a head for sale. Look at this post.

I had all the info for waht u need in another post to someone else. I don't really want to type out all of the info. Why is the search function disabled?

U can use the wire harness from your single cam. Just needs to be slightly modified. No biggy. Do you have the back mount bracket (if you don't have the tranny still attached, it isn't on the motor) or side mount bracket attached on the timing belt side?

Easiest ecu to get ahold of and works good is a obd1 gs-r ecu.

Also, I would get a gs-r head for higher compression and put a skunk2 intake manifold on it. This should give you about 170 to 175 hp to the flywheel. 10 to 15 hp more than having a b16 head on it.

Its a torque monster.

The p28 ECU is running stock, meaning it hasn't been chipped with any aftermarket programming. So it revs to 7200 no prob.

I was neck and neck with an older 5.0 Mustang (late '80s?). I couldn't pull on him. I was surprised though. I always underestimated those older mustangs. But I don't know if he did anything else to his motor.

I'm still getting used to it. I usually start in 2nd gear in normal driving, its smoother. Since I have the SI tranny the gears are really short and I have to go into 3rd to hit 60 mph. In fifth, my rpm is already at 3000 at 65 mph. It makes me drive at the speed limit since I don't want to run my motor high. Its nice when you can accelerate in 5th though.

it will drop right in ur car.

BUT you will need obd1 parts.
such as distributor, alternator, fuel injectors, ecu (for dohc), vtec solenoid.
i THINK thats about it.
the 1st gen head should fit perfectly on the a2 block

hope this helps

I drive a Civic HX. Yeah, I never thought I'd be climbing uphill in 5th gear, I almost have to.

So Unidextrous, what tranny do you have. Since mine is an SI (S4) tranny, the gears are really short. It accelerates great, but it sucks on the freeway. I was just wondering how it was with a GSR tranny.

Thanks a lot for everybody's help. so far everything is going great. now, i do have a twist to add.
my cousin has a spare 96 gsr ecu which he is giving to me for free. in my situation, according to what i read on another post, i should be able to use this ecu regardless of the engine that i put in. so long as i use the right harness. does anybody know how to make a harness adapter, where to buy an adapter, or know where i can obtain more info to do this? (from obdI to obdII)
