Cost of building the lsvtec...

ok, this is weird. i spoke with an engine shop yesterday located a couple hours away from me. they are pretty reputable with building honda engines. when i first told him what i want, his words were 'you're not going to make any power with that'. they are REAL big on boosting. anyway...
he said 800 bucks to assemble the engine. top to bottom. that didnt sound too bad. but, being the cheap bastad i am, i looked further.
i found an engine shop close to me. they have done a couple of lsvtecs and sound pretty knowledgable. all said and done, he gave me a range of 3500 to 3800 bucks, including parts, but not the head. i have the ls block, and i'll use the ls rods. is this an insane price? i know you get what you pay for, but that seems a little steep. he did mention doing a valve job and what not, but that still seems high.
:bh
what do you guys think?

is the 800 to put it together only? the bigger price may also include wiring it up so that you can drive the car

yes, 800 to put it together. the bigger price is for assembly only. the car will not be brought to either shop....just the engine.

i am putting a list of shit together now. so far i have:
(all gsr parts)
oil pump - 105
water pump - 100
timing belt - 30
rod and main bearings - 100
pistons - 400

figure that average price for a port and polish, and valvejob is around 850. the lsvtec "kit" is around 300.
so 800 + 850 + 300 = 1950
than add the price of gaskets, fluids and all that other kind of shit
the higher price still seems a little on the high side to me, but not too bad. especially if they have experience.
what you should do is find out exactly what each shop is doing labor wise, and also find out what you are required to provide to the different shops

if you want to rev the ls block higher than it's stock redline, you'll need to pay some attention to the block. have everything balanced and upgrade the rod bolts if you're using the stock ls rods. you could also take this time to throw in new pistons as well.

new pistons will be added, along with rod bolts.
i am debating on getting the head done this year. maybe it can wait until next winter. hows the idea of just throwing a stock gsr head on a built block (for now)?

Hey guys,
Sorry for bumping, but the shop I chose to build the engine does not recommend getting pistons over 10.5:1 compression. I have seen quite a few people running compression way higher than that in an lsvtec. I was looking around 11-11.5:1. Am I missing something here?

you can run 11+:1 provided you have access to 93+ octane and the person tuning your car knows what he's doing.
