Not to sound like a dumbass, but what is so great about the CRV engines? I haven't been able to find the specs for the motor yet(I haven't really looked that hard either). Any info would be much appreciated.

If you bolt the b20z or b20b blocks to a VTEC head...they have very very nice amounts of torque along with great horsepower. If you have the money and are looking into a swap, you might wanna check this route.
Maybe so...How much are these CRV motors, and what numbers are we looking at in relation to hp and ft./lb?? Also, a motor of that size in a CRX would not allow me to steer the CRX that easily. Still, something to consider...

The great thing about CR-V motors is the power and torque they are capable of. If you look at just stock ratings, you might not be TOO impressed. After all, the USDM B20B produces 126HP, 133ft-lb torque while the USDM B20Z produces 146HP, 133ft-lb torque. But the outputs of these engines is kept artificially low with a restrictive ECU, intake manifold, and exhaust manifold. If you change these components for 1994-1995 LS stuff, power output increases to about B16A levels but with MUCH greater torque. We are talking about 138HP, 132ft-lb measured at the wheels. Or about 162HP, 152ft-lb torque measured at the crank. Keep in mind that all this relates to a B20 with its stock, non-VTEC head. With a VTEC head, output increases greatly.

depends who does it and what you use. i've heard of crvtec's putting out from 175 whp-190whp. then some claim 200-210whp. in a sense, it's best of both worlds.

You can pick up a B20Z engine for about $1200-$1800 depending on mileage. The salvage yards are biginning to get wise about these engines and there demand and that price is sure to go up. The B20 engine isnt any bigger than the B16 or B18 engines. They are basically the same external dimensions. The B20 is basically a B18B engine with a larger bore. So, puting one in a CRX isnt bad at all.
As for jsut slapping a VTEC head on, cant be done. Custom Pistons and stronger rods have to replace the weak stock parts.
Although just keeping the engine without the VTEC head could be made to produce a good amount of HP. I know of one B20Z engine that is puting out 174 HP to the wheels with just bolt ons.
thats the only reason people like the CRVTEC...its puts outs a tremendous amt of torque after a few mods, and the motor has a VERY VERY mean power band and virtually flat torque curve

Sweet! There has been a change of plans though, I am now getting a '91 Civic HB instead, and what all would I have to do to put a B20 into the Civic???

Same thing, the Civic has the same chasis as the CRX. With either car you will have to get a motor mount conversion kit like the Hasport kit; it will run you around $400-$500 for the mount kit.

your right and your wrong.. in a sense.. you can almost just slap a VTEC head on with stock internals of the block.. you just have to get the pistons machined slightly at the valve reliefs to accomodate the larger VTEC valves.. and other than that its the same as any other LS/VTEC type conversion.. my homie has stock internal B20VTEC turbo pushing 300+hp to the wheels with only 7lbs boost.. and if you look around online and anywhere in the LA/SD area, you can find the B20 longblocks for 700-900.. a guy i know is selling the JDM B20 longblocks for 750 everyday.. they go fast tho..

I guarantee your "homie" doesnt push past 7k RPM on the stock internals very often if at all. Im not saying it doesnt work, Im just saying its not going to last as long. Could you hook me up with the info of the place that is selling those long blocks for that cheap? Thanks
no, my homies rev limit is 8100.. our tuners say its safe at that rpm for a long time.. just because the stock rev limit is 7 doesn't mean you have to only stay at that.. its safe to 8000... doesn't go to 8 every shift.. thats pointless.. but its lasted for a while now.. check out www.hondamotorsonline.com thats where you can get the motor at..
why do people continue to insist that a good motor has to be a high revving motor?

This guy I know has a b20 in his CRX and he has clearance problems. His hood doesn't close properly and his header often gets dents from sitting to low to the ground. But as with a lot of the DOHC swaps into CRx’s and Hatch’s the car sit low as it already is and the longer header and lower sitting engine will always be a problem when it comes to clearance.
