so my friend the subaru racer decides he wants me to start building cars with him. I like the idea, sure... I dont know diddily about it, but Ive always wanted to learn. We found a local 93 civic DX hatchback, for 2k, going to pick it up this weekend. I was wondering, how hard is it to swap the k20 into this model? No... Im not planning on this being my first job on it, its wayyyy down the list of things to do... but, any info on how possible this is?
well, i was a little misinformed of the car, its actually a 92 CX... lol stock motor has 289k miles or so the odometer says, seller says it never had any other. anyways... im totally pysched about the car, I see a lot of potential... a lot of work too, but potential.
Swapping in a k-series is not hard, but it is a very involved process. Sit down and work out a budget before you get started. I've seen quite a few people get started down this road and it ends up costing a lot more than expected and they end up selling off all of their stuff at a loss.
money and time are not really an issue. working on a 10-12k budget, minus car, which was 2k. Leaves 8-10k for parts and such, and maybe more than that down the road. I was thinking of just putting an B16 or B18 to save a little money, but still get a good power boost. Later on when I have cash and not credit, I can go for the k20. It depends on a few variables in my life right now, so Im not exactly sure. B16 would be nice, would free me up to do more work on the body and suspension instead of worrying about wether my motor is going to die any minute, but damn it would be nice to have the k20.
A proper k20 swap would eat up your entire budget without leaving anything for other ares like suspension, interior, body, etc. A b18c1 would be a great choice and would cost half as much. The only problem there is that you are most likely getting a very high mileage motor at that point considering the motor hasn't been produced in nearly 8yrs.
i dont understand? if the k20 is roughly... idk, its about 6k for the 6 speed with a harness and mounting gear.... or about 4500 for the 5 speed... where are the other 4k or 5k dollars going?
on a side note, what kind of whp can we squeeze out of a b16, because those are running about $2200 + mounts, with 35k miles. Assume we apply some FI, and fuel rail, fuel pump, some tuning work, etc etc.
Don't mess with the b16 just go with the k20. The cheapest way to go is get the k20 type S full swap with hasport mount, custom axles, aftermarket linkage, and aftermarket headers ( stock wont fit ) it should come out to like 6,000 to 6,500 and you will save your self like a 1,000 because you said that you and your boy will do the installation . But if you are a baller just go with the k20 type R and the works to get it installed will come out to like 8,000 that will leave you with 2,000 to do suspension. IT is very important to do it, because you can have all the power in the world but if you can't lay it down you ant nothing . LET ME KNOW BECAUSE I CAN GET GOOD DEAL ON SWAPS AND PARTS ....... GOOD LUCK MAN ON YOUR BUILD.....
man im getting a lot of hate on other forums for going k20... they all want me to work on the D thats in it. why would I want to do that I say? so i can get stomped around here? Average is.... idk, 11's... my volvo beats the shit out of the D thats in it. I appreciate the idea of making the car as fast as it can be with its stock motor... but thats just not the point for me lol. so... thanks for the advice. Keep the ideas coming, part recomendations would be awesome. Especially parts to build a B16 or a B18 motor for a serious turbo application, if I decide the k20 isnt worth the extra cash.
Assuming the $400 header, that is $8175 right there, and that is just the big ticket items for a basic swap assuming everything is in perfect condition.
Its all about what you want. I went k-series because neither the b-series or d-series could do what i wanted. If you can get a b-series to do with you want and still have the same reliability you would have with a k-series, then by all means save some money and go b-series.
that breakdown was helpful. Everything in the $5000 k20 Im looking at is included except for headers and exaust. Im leaning away from the idea of the b16 series right now... now looking at b18's to see if they can do what Im wanting... as always k20 is an option, just trying to decide if its worth the cash... thats a lot of money for a 20 year old lol. Ty for teh help. Got any good knowledge about the b18c for me? thats what Im leaning towards for right now... prolly change but still.
What kind of b18c it can be the gsr or the type R ....If you are going to go with a b- series don't go with a b16 just stick with the b18s i have 12 years in the Honda scene and the b16 don't get you any were trust me ... only if you want to spend a shit load of money to get power from the b16 .... I know by saying this i will get a lot of replays but its the truth........
