1 Month, 1 Cabby, 1 Vr6

Well the motor in my 84 cabby was wore out. went to drain the water from the radiator to make things easier to pull the tranny to put in a new clutch well had oil in the water and didn't feel like dealing with the motor and the mechanical fuel injection. So instead of fixing the motor I hate so much I decided to take the motor I had sitting around that I was gonna use for my other rabbit project and decided to put it in the convertible. so I pulled the engine and started getting stuff ready for the swap. I had to wait a week but I went and bought a 95 passat for a parts car. and well stripped it for everything its worth.

so here's the plan:
1. vr6 swap
2. subframe mounted into the rabbit. yeah I know I have to weld in mounting points for the frame as mk1 did not come with one
3. ABS. I have already fit the abs to the bracket and fit it in the car wiring is ready to go just have to make a mounting bracket for the computer and drill holes for the rear sensors
4. 5 lug swap I have the rear done the front will be done when I put in the front subframe this also means I now have 4 wheel disc brakes
5. dash swap which is almost done the drivers side is mounted I have to cut off a couple inches then I'll be able to mount in the passenger side
6 tunnel swap well cause the dash would be complete without a center console I decided to swap in the center console from the passat into the rabbit by doing this I will move the shifter up and back allowing a better flow of cables and I will be able to use the stock e-brake cables since I will be using the passat e-brake as well. where the ebrake sits now it was a couple inches too short by moving it back it will help alot.
7 newer fuse box
8 weld in the newer style of shock towers, I'm reletively new to vw and forgot what you guys like to call them. yeah I'm halfway done with it. I need to buy another spot weld drill bit before I can do the passenger side
9 almost forgot I will be adding cruise control as well.

I think I might be forgetting something but thats the gist of it all. heres some pics of the fun stuff I got done already

I staggered and then back stitched the welds its completely welded out but the pic didn't load. it looks pretty damn good and won't be going anywhere








I have more pics but my internet is still acting up and these were all I could upload. I am trying to get it done by the 15th I started a few weeks ago. I'm trying to get it done within a month but its gonna be close. I hope to have it done no later than the 20th but I went from just gonna weld in the mounts to welding in the whole subframe, swapping dashes and now I decided to add the tunnel.

so today I pieced the dash together but ran out of epoxy.it doesn't look bad but I'm not happy with it. I will definitely have to get it reupholstered early next year when I get the time. I will also have to get some new carpet I don't like how it looks but what I have now I will have to deal with. I plan on using the passat radiator and the a/c radiator. I also found the frame rails to be the same distance apart so I plan on cutting the bottom part of the core support to allow the front frame to be mounted in with motor mount. this way it allows the room I need for the radiators. I may still have an issue with the fans but at least I'll be able to use the radiators.

I also plan on adding cruise control to it as well.

I do like feedback let me know what you guys think.

I am kinda looking for a shift boot for the center console since the car I'm pulling this crap from is an auto I won't have one and need to source one out

my engine is very simple.....that's why nissan switched to the sr20det over the ca18det....cheaper, simple, makes decent power

heres the dash in, the center console is just sitting there right now. there also isn't enough room between the seats for it. luckily I have room between the seat and the door so I will be cutting the brackets on the seat and moving it over towards the door about an inch. until then I will not put the passenger seat in the car. unless after I get the tunnel in it somehow squeezes in next to it

no it will be manual, I'm sure the reason you said that was the center console. it came from an auto passat I will need a manual shift cover a some point but it won't be needed right now so I'm not concerned with it.

heres the plan with the engine. its going in stock. it won't stay that way for long, I got some gauges, I have a turbo, oil cooler, and will be buying some more turbo goodies soon enough. 300-400whp would be great to begin with.

tomorrow I will make a trip to fastenal to buy some cutting discs as I ran out. which also means I will start on the engine bay tomorrow. first thing I will do is modify the front core support to fit the radiator

I started wiring the car back up and damnit if I didn't forget what some of the connectors hooked to under the dash. oh well I'm sure I'll figure it out sooner or later. but I do have some pictures I know how amused you guys are with pictures, you won't go into a thread without them.

so the fusebox sorda kinda snaps in and on one side has a round piece sticking out to keep it in place well I wanted to give me some room between the firewall and the backside of the box to mess with wires if I had to so I moved it out a bit, well by doing this you cannot check fuse b/c the dash is in the way. so I rounded of one side of the piece so that when pulled on the fuse box could rotate down so I could access fuses and relays. so by doing this I can get to the back really easy and still get to the front really easy. I like it.

now bad news I figured out last week in order to use the tunnel from the passat I would have to move the seat belt thing(its late and I forget) out of the way so I took the one off the passat seats and put it on mine but I forgot you have to tilt the seat forward to get in the back something the passat doesn't have to do, so when it tilts forward the seat hits the seat thing and stops it. so I will have to bend it a little and move it to the outside of the seat instead of the inside so the seat will fold forward.

so after not much sleep the past couple days i have made some progress.

welded the old master cylinder rod to the new rod so that it would be longer and have adjustment if needed. wiring is done just need to find a place to mount the sensor wires to firewall and mount the control module

cruise control is almost complete. got the vacuum motor mounted under the driver side fender up near the antenna. its bolted through the top like the fender bolts are. vacuum line will be run through the hole where the speedo cable used to be. welded tab onto the gas peddle as well

vacuum canister on the passat is much smaller than the rabbit canister so I mounted it in the driver side fender where the vapor canister(i think thats what it was) was using the same mounting bracket and all.

I cut out the driver side subframe mounts from the passat I will cutout the passenger tomorrow, I need to get another sawzall blade.

wiring is a definite mess and I know I'm missing relays that I will have to go buy. I should have the engine mounted in by the end of the week most likely done by saturday evening. which will leave me with a bunch of odds and ends to finish up. the 20th aint looking to bad for a time to finish I just have to bust some balls and get it done. does anyone know how to remove the ignition switch from the passat steering rack it looks like it just pulls straight off but its not for some reason.
