Hi all,
I bought a 96 Isuzu Oasis (Honda Odyssey) off Ebay a few weeks ago. I even found some college kids to drive it from NY to TX for me. My problem is that when Jiffylube changed the oil, they also checked the tranny fluid and found it was low so they put in a qt. of Autozone fluid (the correct type) and a qt. of Lucas. I'm not a fan of either so I asked the people bringing it down to take it to the local Honda dealer and have them drain the tranny and replace it with genuine Honda ATF.
That long explanation leads me to these short questions: What's the going price at a dealership for Honda ATF? Also, what's the going price for a dealership to drain and refill the tranny? I always do my own work so I'm flying blind.... Thanks all!

Depends on the Honda stealership. Independant Honda mechanics are the best choice. But a stealership here in new England would charge from $80-$120 to do this job? Ed's Honda (independant Honda only mechanic) would charge $45!

The people ended up getting it done for $35, not too bad of deal. I couldn't imagine paying $125 to have someone remove a bolt, catch the old fluid in a pan, tighten a bolt, and then refill the transmission.
I hear what you're saying about the stealerships, although to be fair there are some fair dealerships out there. The fair guys are definitely in the minority though...

Good to hear you were treated right. That is a good price, is the tranny shifting right.

The people driving it say that everything is fine but I don't know if they really know the difference. Hopefully when I get it and drive it everything will be good to go. I'll keep you posted. Just for peace of mind and since I REALLY don't like Lucas, I'll probably drain and fill it myself one more time.
I've used it twice....should've learned the first time. The first time, the transmission went up in smoke about 100 miles after I put it in. It was already slipping when I put it in and it could have been coincidence, but either way it definitely didn't live up to the billing on the can.
The second time, I put it in because I was towing a trailer and it supposedly would lower trans temps. I had a temp guage on my tranny and it fell about 2 degrees, which was probably due more to added fluid rather than the Lucas.
IMHO, Lucas isn't anything special and in my experience, it did more harm than good.
While we're on the subject, I've never liked "Fix in a Can" type products except for SeaFoam...that stuff is the truth
I am the same, especialy oil additives. Oil now a days even the cheapest stuff is much better by it self than with junk addatives added. I must say Seafoam and Marvel Mystery Oil works well. I have used it to clean carbon deposits in the upper cyl. and once you take a head off a car that used it recently the diff. is amazing!

X2 on the Marvel Mystery Oil...my dad showed me the light with MMO. Good stuff definitely.
Received the car from the kids and they told me the folks at Jiffy told them it had a massive tranny leak. They kept refilling it on the way so it wouldn't run dry. I did a quick check and found the 3 bottommost tranny bolts (that hold the case together) were loose. Tightened them up, put some sealant on the threads, and kissed the "massive leak" goodbye. My thinking is that someone at Jiffylube loosened the bolts, diagnosed the leak, and then was hoping the kids would pay them to fix. Aaarghhhh!

You HAVE to write a letter to the headquarters of Jiffy. They have done this to TOO MANY good cars! I know of two people that had a fluid change there they did not tighten or MADE a LEAK and destroyed a engine in one and a tranny in another!

I wish I had a way to prove it wasn't leaking before they took it in, then I'd definitely follow through. Right now all I have is a hunch though, if get more solid info then I'll surely be making some calls.
