Project 4G37... tuning a DSM

This summer my buddy and I are looking to turbo his NON turbo Eagle Talon. For reference, this car came in three models. 4G63T- 2.0 Turbo 190ish hp. 4G63- 2.0 Non turbo 145hp. And the 4G37- 1.8L 93hp. This thing is slower than a stock CRX HF. But the thing about the 4G37 is that it has very thick cylinder walls, a cast iron block, and a 9:1 compression ratio. This thing can handle 15psi on a stock motor. Were looking to run 8-10, and make 160whp or so. We will be using the turbo manifold from an 86 Dodge Colt, which bolts up to the head. There is no aftermarket for this motor, so everything will be one off. The Dodge Colt/ Mitsu Mirage of the mid 80's had a similar, carburated turbo motor (4g32 I think), so many of these parts are useable. Of the few hundred people I know of that tune their 1.8's, I know about 3 people who have turboed this engine before, and all 3 are using an SAFC2 to tune with. This seems pretty shitty to me. My friend and I want to learn to tune- so for the same price as a dyno tune, we can pick up our own wideband sensor and chip burner. I was wondering if programs like Crome or Neptune would work in a DSM, and if so- which is easier to learn? We will probably be doing a street tune, with maybe an hour on a dyno just to clean things up. Also, can the OBD1 DSM ecu's be chipped? I dont see why not, but my friend says they cant. This motor is a single cam, and an adjustable cam gear is not made for it. Can stock timing be used on this setup? If not, how can we adjust this? The motor is a non interferance 16V, btw.

You can't really use crome or neptune on that because 1. all those programs are pretty much honda specific and 2. the car is OBO, i'm guessing..What you can do is buy and set up a megasquirt management..just search google for megasquirt. And is this an coil-over-plug or distrib. engine?

The engine is a 93. Its OBD1, distrubutor motor.

Bummer. DSMlink is only for turbo ecu's. I dont think we could utilize the factory 4G63T ecu.

I think your only option here is a flat-out standalone(Megasquirt/Motec/AEM ems) or AFC controller.

Yeah, and that sucks because theyre so expensive. Do you know if these ECU's can be chipped? I dont see why not, but then again, I dont know much about DSM's.

could you use the 4g63 ecu (i know the 2.0 is twin cam and the 1.8 single) but the 2.0 will run if the cam sensor is unpluged.
the lancer gts ecu it was single cam.
the shadow turbo has a 1.6 turbo that ecu may work, its single cam to.
the lebaron turbo is single cam and its engine management is simple.
also i was told that in japan they had a 1.8 turbo verson in japan (as per one of the guys on my gsx fourms)

oh and you can use a super-afc on the 1.8. you can pick them up used for $100 on ebay. this would be cheep and easy. my gsx uses a safc2 to put down over 500 whp the safc isnt that bad for the eclipse, its not the best but it works.
or just convert it to hks's vain speed, its better than air dencity anyway but its not cheep

let me know how it goes i am big into the dsm's

there is a kid in my town that has a 1.8 with a turbo if i can find him i will get some pics for you guys.
also there have been alot of 1.8 turbo cars and afew companys sell kits

one question what turbo are you planing on

there is no chip for the 1.8 eclipse ecu,as per the dsm fourms. the reason they give is beuause the ecu is not an eprom

Thanks for all the help. I think the turbo were using is off an 87 Mirage, because the manifold and turbo will bolt right onto the 1.8 motor.

then shouldnt you be able to use the marage ecu as well i would guess its fuel maps would be better than the eclipse's

also isnt the marage an 11a turbo, thats very small i would think a 14b or a 16g would bolt up and be cheep and easy to find

if the ecu is EPROM then you could have socketed/chipped but i don't think they are. that leaves you looking for a 1g turbo dsm eprom ecu and most likely you'll have to get the harness too. if thats not an option then you could probably get an aem ems but that will require the 1g dsm harness as well.

crome/neptune will not work with dsm ecu's. if you're able to get a 1g dsm ecu in there you could get DSMLINK but its not cheap (~$550new or ~$350used)


personally i would not take on a project like that. it will take too much time/money/effort to get it done and in the end it will still be slower than a bone stock gst.
