Looking for another gear??

Hey all,

Just bought an '06 GPW and even though I'm pretty sure its normal for the car the gearing seems to make hwy travel (70-75 mph) seem like the engine is running too high for that constant.... I knew that 6th gear was taller and figured it would drop down a bit, but at 70 I'm running about 3700 and 75 is good for about 4000.. does this seem normal? if so, o.k. to drive it a couple hours on the highway like that.. dumb question I know, just seems to be really high for hwy driving.

10 people have read this and still no comment.... anyone? maybe its just to stupid of a question.. that they obviously engineer the car to be on the road under many conditions.. just seems like the revs are really tall at hwy speeds?

I haven't drove mine in about 2 months, but if I remember correct. 3500-4000rpm at 70-75MPH sounds about right. S2000 have tight or close gear ratios manly because of its lack of torque, and it was never intended to be a high MPH car.

you'll have to get used to that man if ppl read it and can't help, they probably won't post.. unless they're like me and just chime in with some random bull. like right now.. i don't have an s2k but i'm sure you'll be fine @ 4000 rpm. what's the redline?

It's a bone stock '06 GPW so the redline is 8000 from what I read...haven't tapped the limiter yet. I've had cars with similar trans. in the past. For example I had an eg coupe with an LS/Vtec and an Si tranny.. gears were close much like the S2000 but 5th gear dropped things down quite a bit more than 6th gear does in my S. Different car, different design I suppose... just crossed my mind that a 2 or 3 hour drive seemed like a long time to hold the engine at 3500+.

don't have an s2000 (yet... 8 more months to go before i get rid of my tsx lease)

but i can tell you from my past experience...

i was the second owner of an '86 toyota van (yes, that was the actual name of the thing) which before i gave her up at 380,000 miles (THAT IS NOT A TYPO) on it's original engine and tranny, i drove for about 40,000 of those last miles...

the whole time i had it, the tranny (3 speed auto) did not never shifted into top gear... so i piled the miles on her, doing 60-70 mph when on the highway...

suffice to say, i was seeing 6000 rpm with redline close by when cruising at those speeds on long, FREQUENT road trips...

after 3 years of ownership, the damn thing still kept on going...
just like my 320,000 mile civic you see in my sig (yup, original d16 engine and tranny)

damn things are unbreakable - i wanted to swap my engine 10 years ago!

ah, i miss that old van... jdm vans are cool - so full of character.

3500 is not high because with a 8000 redline youre not even half way their. i think thats how you have to look at it. before honda comes out with a motor they will run a motor @ full tilt another words bouncing off redline for 1 full week without shutting it off so letting this motor sit at even 5000 rpm's for an 1hour is still just teasing it for an all out run. have fun with it and dont let your concious get in the way. lol
