S2000 convertible top replacement
So, I've got an 01 S2000. Curious, how long can I expect the top to last before I need to replace it? I've noticed some of the filler coming out around the driver's side window. The guy that works on convertible tops locally said that's not a problem just to snip it off with scissors. Yesterday, I noticed about an inch tear in the fabric low on the top behind the driver's side window. The first tear I've had on the top. I was told to use silicone to patch that. I asked my Honda dealer how much a new top would cost and they quoted me $1800. I'm planning on making the repair and seeing how much more life I can get out of this top before making the new top investment. Have any of you guys had to replace a top? Had any issues like the ones I've mentioned?

my 01 has developed a pair of holes on each side of the top, behind the windows... by how the top folds down, and rubbing against the top frame just put holes in it.
Supposedly they reinforced the area for production in the '02 models, when they went to the glass rear window. it's a common problem on first gen AP1s, and there is a patch kit available from Honda... it's just a vinyl patch and some silicone sealant.
The plastic rear window will go eventually, cause of how it folds, putting a crease in it. A lot of them crack there... most frequently when it's cold and thus, rigid. the plastic window is replaceable... though it'd make more sense just to upgrade to the '02+ glass rear window top... it's a relatively easy install, and can be purchased from Hardtopguy for a pretty decent price. Way less than the dealer, and easier to work with as well.

My '03 developed a tear late last summer. It would all depend on how much you lower and raise your top. I dropped mine any chance I got, and always raised it when I parked it (unless I was only going to be away from the car for less than five minutes.)
My rip was in the back upper corner right where the fabric turns from the back of the top to the side and the top of the car. From what I've heard from other S2K owners and the lead S2 tech at the dealership, is that this is the first place the tops will go, and a lot of people have the same problem.
When I got mine replaced (I had other holes in it from a bad bar and rubbing on the latches) the local place here was selling high-end cloth tops over the vinal ones (like the cloth tops they put on BMWs and Benzs). The cloth tops were suposed to be stronger than the vinals and still have the glass window. They were selling for about $950, vs the OE top which was about $1100. I paid about $500 for the install.
BUT I couldn't tell you how I like the cloth because I went with an OE top. My dealership gave me a super deal on one they had. The dealership's owner bought a S2000 and had the blue top installed. They kept the black one and it was just sitting in the back for years collecting dust. I asked about it and they gave it to me (pretty much brand new) for $400.

What a deal. I'm going to make the repair and see how it goes. The rest of the top looks good.

California's a HUGE state, man. Far enough north and it gets cold. Oddly enough, some parts remind me of the redneck south with old beat up pickup trucks with lift-kits and big mudder tires.
On the other hand, I met a guy at a local meet who drove his S out to Cali and was wondering why everyone had the tops up. He figured out why when he looked in the mirror. With no hat, and just a pair of sunglasses, he wound up with with very pronounced 'coon eyes.
just in case you don't know what that is, it's being tan everywhere on your face except around your eyes where the sunglasses blocked the rays. It's a very interesting farmer tan.

I'm definitely not interested in a hardtop. I love the freedom of the open air and its so easy and quick to drop the soft top.

The guy that works on them here actually took a hammer and bent the sharp piece back that was rubbing my top. A little scary, but this is the guy the Honda dealer uses here so I trusted him.
