Weird rattling noise under the hood?!

Whenever i turn my car on there is a weird rattling noise that goes away a little bit wen i drive, and the maintenance required light turned on. At first i thought it was the oil so i changed it but it still rattles. Also i went to autozone and had them run a diagnostic and they said its either that it needs an oil change or theres a clog or sumthing else but i forgot what it was because it sounded like it wasnt the problem. Can anyone help??

Just a little FYI, the "Maintainance Required" light is NOT the same as a "Check Engine" light. the "MR" light is nothing more than an Idiot light to remind those who never do anything with their car to get the oil changed. It starts blinking when you start the car at 5,000 miles (I think) and stays on after 7,500 miles. You can reset that yourself using a goofy thing with the key in the ignition and pressing/holding a couple of the gage cluster buttons.

If you have "CE" light, then your problem is more serious, but could still be a stupid problem like a loose gas cap. If it is indeed your "CE" light that is coming on, then go to someplace that give a free OBD2 diagnostic check and get the code.

The rattle could be coming from a loose or bent heat shield, like the one that protects your batery and electronics from the heat of your exhaust manifold. I know when I put mine back in after changing the manifold out (on both cars) the sheild was either loose or bent. That caused a nasty rattle at idle RPMs.

Also, does this "rattle" sound a bit like gears grinding? If it does, then I got some good and bad news for ya.

How many miles do you have on the car, how do you drive it, what history do you know about any previous owner(s) (if any)

I'd say very nessicary. It protects your batery and electronics from the heat of the manifold. Even more so if you have an aftermarket manifold because they do not come with the secondary sheilding that the OEM one does. Without these protective measures, I would immagine that area of the engine bay can get hot enough to melt plastics and other components if you drive it hard enough. That can lead to a fire.

I asked about this before when I replaced my manifold, because didn't really feel like puting the heat shield back in. It looked a whole lot cleaner without it. But most people here and elsewhere said to put it back in. It only makes sense. You can get aftermarket heat sheilds that look a bit better than the OEM one, so maybe you'd want to look there.

I know someone either here or on S2Ki mentioned a guy who's S started on fire because of the lack of a heat sheild. I appologize I can't recall the exact thread. It's been a while.

The first place I'd check is that really really really annoying bolt in the back. That's where mine was coming from, and since it's probably the hardest bolt to loosen/tighten for that whole thing, its also most likely the one that people neglect to get right either out of lazyness or frustration.

Also, watch the heat shield while your engine is running. Play with the throttle valve to change the RPMs and watch what the HS does. It might resonate at certain RPMs which is why you would get the vibration after driving for a little bit.

If the bolt is indeed tight, then the sheild may be bent a little. Try bending it back and that might also fix the problem. . . . if the vibration IS the heat sheild.

update: the rattling is still there i think it may be a belt or something on the front of the engine. Could it be maybe a sensor or sumthing? i fxed the heat sheild the rattling isnt as bad anymore but it rattles wen the car turns on for about 15-20 seconds then goes away for the most part while driving. Any ideas?

You never answered Mountain-Man about how many miles are on the car, etc.
That would be good to know.

Anyhow...listen to how a bad TCT sounds:
