Activision: Wii to Sell Double PS3 in North America This Year

In a conference call following Activision's incredible fiscal results, Activision Publishing head Mike Griffith provided internal estimates for hardware growth in North America of the major consoles.

He said that Activision expects hardware increases in North America during calendar year 2008 of 2-3 million units for PS2, 3-4 million units for PS3, 4-5 million units for Xbox 360, and 7 million units for the Wii. He added that Activision expects handhelds to grow by 11 million units but did not break that estimate down into PSP versus DS sales.

"Calendar year 2008 is an important year for the three new consoles and we expect their hardware installed base will increase by more than 60 percent in the U.S. and Europe," he noted.

On the software front, he said that Activision expects the combined North American and European software markets will grow in excess of 15 percent during this calendar year. "We expect overall software market growth will continue to disproportionately reward large proven franchises broadly across platforms and across geographies," Griffith said.

Pricing has been off-putting to some gamers, but Griffith said Activision "continues to be pleased with the acceptance of the current software pricing" and the company expects the standard $59.99 (on PS3 and 360) and $49.99 (on Wii) will continue to hold. In addition, "value added titles" such as the company's own Guitar Hero, will continue to "command significantly higher pricing."
