NES Console-On-A-Chip Mod

NES Console-On-A-Chip Mod
The console...is in the cartridge.
by Gerry Block

April 22, 2008 - Console mods are hot these days, and we've seen some pretty nice work done on the most modern consoles like the Wii. Some modders' tastes run retro however, and today pictures of a rather awesome creation by a Frenchman known as kotomi are blowing up on the net.

In an act evoking the metaphysical mysteries of the Moebious strip, kotomi has managed to pack an entire NES System-on-a-Chip clone within the confines of a Mario Bros. cartridge.

The system covers all the bases, from a top mounted cartridge slot to a dedicated power switch and reset button. Two controller ports are recessed in the cart's mouth, while composite A/V jacks line the opposite end. A side-mounted power cord inlet rounds out the critical components, making the system fully functional, as kotomi demonstrates.

Though we have to imagine that attempting a similar mod with the original NES circuitry would be quite impossible, it's difficult to not be impressed when an entire console can be crammed within one of its own cartridges, even if the chips involved are massively minimized from their original design. The circle, indeed, has no beginning.

No kidding.

By the way, I love your sig.

Suffice to say, I was introduced to that film last Thursday, and have watched it three times over since then.
