Nintendo Says Wii Sold More Games in First 18 Months than Any Other Console in History
Nintendo boasts that the Wii may have a greater impact on the industry than Sony's ubiquitous PlayStation 2.

Speaking at the Electronic Gaming Summit, Cammie Dunaway, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Nintendo of America, said that the Wii has sold more software in its first 18 months on the market than any other video game platform before it. The Wii has sold around 50 million games in its first 18 months, compared to about 42 million games in the first 18 months for the PS2, 30 million for the Xbox 360, 28 million for the original Xbox, and 20 million for the PS3.
It's important to note that Nintendo's software sales figure refers to boxed games sold at retail and not virtual console games or Wii Sports (which is packed in with the hardware here, but not in Japan where it's a best seller).
In terms of hardware, 9.5 million Wiis were sold during the platform's first 18 months, compared to 8.5 million PS2s, 5.4 million Xbox 360s, 5.2 million original Xbox consoles and 4.2 million PS3s.
"While we appreciate the impact the PlayStation 2 had on sales and the industry, perhaps we are even more impactful," Dunaway commented.
Whether the Wii ultimately becomes more successful than the PS2, which has sold upwards of 130 million units globally, only time will tell. Nintendo sure is off to a great start though.
Thanks to Kotaku for the info.
