Sony PSP outsells Nintendo DS 2-to-1 in Japan in April

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp's (6758.T) PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld game gear outsold Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS) DS portable player more than 2-to-1 in Japan in April, game magazine publisher Enterbrain said.

But in the console market, Nintendo sold five times as many Wii machines as Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) in the four weeks through April 27, an Enterbrain report dated Thursday showed.

PSP sales came to 380,867 units, beating DS sales of 169,911 units, as Capcom Co Ltd's (9697.T) hunting action game "Monster Hunter Freedom 2G," designed for the PSP, was the top seller for the second straight month, the report said.

Nintendo sold 187,121 units of the Wii in the month, compared with 37,676 units of the PS3.

The Wii has been leading the PS3 in sales since their launches in late 2006 as its innovative and easy-to-play games attracted women and the elderly, expanding the overall gaming population.

Yeah, I think it was a camo patterned version?

I don't fully buy into the hype, but I can't deny their street level coolness factor. (At least in Japan.)

These are like the simples design ever... Now all we need is Takashi Murakami and Louis Vuitton edition DS.

^ I went to the Murakami exhibit here in Los Angeles. They actually set up a LV store in the museum to push their goods. It was larger then the museum's own gift shop.

But yeah, if you get mens fashion magazines from Japan like: Goods Press, smart, Tarzan, etc. Bathing Ape is always given a very high profile.

I think it's impressive, none the less. When's the last time anything outsold the DS in Japan? Lol.

At any rate, I think you are correct. Nintendo needs another big game or a system redesign, and sales will take off again.

Did you get a chance to see Kanye new vid (which is old now) called "Good Morning" which Murakami help make?

O and yea one of my classmate did a presentation on the guy and she had a vid showing his art show. Have you seen any of his old stuff? Because my teacher loved his old stuff and he believes that he is a sell out now since he does these things for LV.

^ Yeah, they played the vid. on a pretty large screen. It's got to have been a good 15'+ diagonally across + the sound system was theatre quality. I'm not a big KW fan, but the video's message of not letting yourself be kept from your goals & also improving yourself was a good one.

They also had a live action short, and a Kai Kai & Ki Ki anime movie.

The both times I went I probably spent 45mins - 1 hour there. So it wasn't too long, but still there was a lot to see.

I got the postcard of "Creatures from Planet 66 Enjoying the Summer" here on my desk.
