2005 tyre rules clarified

With recent talk and controversy surrounding the 2005 tyre regulations, F1Racing.net brings you clarification with the rules. Speaking to tyre manufacturer Bridgestone, the 2005 tyre regulations are as follows.


During a Grand Prix weekend no driver can use more than four sets of dry weather tyres, four sets of wet weather tyres, and three sets of extreme weather tyres. In the case that a driver change is made during an event, the tyres allocated to the original driver must be used by the new driver.

From the four sets of dry weather tyres each driver will be allocated two sets of different specification for use on the first day of practice. .


Before 8am (or 7am during events in North America) on the second day of practice each driver must nominate which tyre specification he wil use for the remainder of the event. In the case that both free practice sessions on the first day of the event are declared wet, then the decision may be deferred until 12pm (or 11am during events in North America).

Unless the use of wet or extreme weather tyres is necessary, one of the remaining unused sets of dry weather tyres must be used for both of the qualifying sessions, all reconnaissance laps and the entire race, unless a precautionary tyre change is necessary (such as in the case of a puncture).

Looks like the norm for FIA rules, you have to read it slowly and multiple times to get it. What I want to know is if there is a wreck on the day of the race and during practice, what the penalty will be if they need more tires, or they just can't go on. Remember last year Michelin's were falling to pieces. Are they still going to check the depth of the tire groove after racing? Teams might not have a choise to change because they have no more available tires. They try and get theses in depth rules but they leave more questions. And teams are going to exploit whatever they can.
