Japan's Sakon Yamamoto joins Renault as test driver
Reuters - Tuesday, February 5
LONDON, Feb 4 - Japan's Sakon Yamamoto has joined former champions Renault as a test driver after being dropped by both the Super Aguri and Spyker Formula One teams in the past two years.
Yamamoto, 25, raced for Spyker -- now renamed as Force India -- in the last seven races of 2007 but his best finish was 12th place in his home grand prix in the wet at Fuji last September.
Before that, he was replaced at struggling Super Aguri by Briton Anthony Davidson and has failed to score a point in 14 starts.
"We plan a particularly aggressive development programme for the coming year and his F1 experience will be useful to us in this context," said team boss Flavio Briatore in a statement.
"Sakon will boost our visibility in important markets. He will be an important asset for the team," added the Italian.
Yamamoto, who has brought important sponsorship to his previous two teams, will play a role in Renault's F1 Roadshow programme with the team putting on displays in countries around the world.
