Today the FIA announced it has changed the Formula One qualifying. At the next race on May 29th at the Nurburgring there will be only one qualifying session. All teams agreed in Monaco to the changed format.
The new qualifying procedure means that qualifying will happen in one session on Saturday. The driver will set one timed lap with race fuel under parc ferme conditions (just like in 2004). The running order in qualifying is the reversed order of the previous race result. In other words, the winner of the last race is the last to go out in qualifying on Saturday.
FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
QUALIFYING
23.05.2005
With the agreement of the competing teams and the Formula 1 Commission, the FIA World Motor Sport Council has changed Formula One qualifying, starting with the European Grand Prix this coming weekend. The new qualifying procedure will be:
- one qualifying session only from 13.00 to 14.00 on Saturday;
- single lap qualifying with race fuel under parc fermé conditions (as 2004);
- running order to be reverse of finishing order of previous race (ie winner of last race goes last).
It could have taken a race or two to get caught up with the current qualy format but now everything should be pretty much square... I just wish they would change it where it was one hot lap with low fuel. But eh what do I know.

you mean when it was like an hour session and you just kept going out till you set the fastest lap you could?
That was my favorite too but I doubt you'll see that again.
Teh old one hour qualifying format!!! Its been so many years, yeah thats my favorite too. I loved it when there was 3 minutes left in the session and every team would send out all their cars for one last hot-lap, sometimes 1st position would change 3 times in the last minute of qualifying. The only downside of that format is that it would be soooo boring for the first 20 minutes, because its a waiting game for Minardi to clear the track and lay down the rubber for the top teams.
