Spanish Team Hopes to Start 2-Car CART Program
Among the hopefuls looking to start a Champ Car team for CART’s new-look 2003 season is Racing Engineering, a Spanish-based sports car and single-seater racing organization. Team owner Alfonso de Orleans-Borbon says he is working to put together the necessary funding for a two-car Champ Car program.
“We have two sponsors very interested,” said Orleans-Borbon, “but right now our numbers don't add up. It all depends on the help CART can give us and, at the moment, that is not clear.”
The team won races in the Telefonica Formula Nissan series this year with both Frenchman Franck Montagny and Briton Justin Wilson. Wilson, the 2001 Formula 3000 International champion and F1 test driver, tested one of Newman/Haas Racing’s Toyota/Lolas last month at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where he impressed the team with his first run on an oval (click here for story). Racing Engineering also ran a Spanish F3 team this season, which won that series’ teams championship.
