thinking of getting a bike
i know some one previously posted on some good begginer bikes. i remem i wanted a bike when i turned 19 and i thought it was just a phase yadda yadda but its lingered in my head for a long while now. when i end up wanting something bad enough i some how strive to get it. when i started out with my teg i had originally planned to keep it "street legal" and just make it quick. ive definately surpassed that now and loved just about every moment of it. ive been talkin to a "few" ppl i knew from HS who have or had a bike and of course they all told me once they got their own bike they were in love with it. i have a few questions for those of u who already own a bike. i didnt really get to chat long with them and ask them all these newb questions:
1.How long did it take u to get ur license for a bike?
2.Do u have to take special courses to get ur bike license?
3.Was it hard to learn to ride a bike for the first time, and is it all simliar to a manual car?
4.Im around 20 years old, about how much was it for ur insurance after u got a bike?
5.I was thinking of getting a GSX-R 750 or 600 used. I am entirely new to the bike scene so I am not sure how many miles would be considered too much for a used bike.
If i do decide to go through with this then id want a quick bike that was used and still has a good amount of life left in it so thats why i ask these noob questions. All pointers welcome

Look into the Suzuki SV bikes. I got an 02' for 4k, 6k miles and mint. Usually they are naked but i got the S so it's a faired version, also the previous owner bought th optional lower fairing for it so it looks like any sport bike. Good for beginning on though, its a 650 Vtwin so it has a nice predictable powerband. Rides really good and i found it was very easy to learn on with enough power to keep you interested until you have alot of experience to get something bigger....Good luck

ill look into those, i think my biggest problem is getting financed . i have two years of GOOD credit but no big car payments or anything to show for it. id prob have to get my parents to co sign for the bike which i doubt they would do. maybe my brother would but itd be a pretty big favor to ask.

1. & 2. Drive around your neighbor hood or a parking lot to get a good feel for the bike. Once you feel confident, you go take your test. There is a stopping test... you speed up to like 15 mph then start stopping at the first white line and be completely stopped by the second white line without locking up the tires. Then they'll have you weave through cones, and you get a point deducted for every one you hit. You also do a simple accelerate through two gears then come to a complete stop. They'll ask you to point to different things on the bike (fuel switch, ignition, etc) They'll have you drive in this really thin 1ft wide rectangle that's about 20 feet long as slow as you can without touching the lines and if you do they deduct points and you have to be in there for at least 10 seconds or something like that. Few other little things but I was 1 point off from a perfect score so it's not too hard. Just practice and they made you take the test on your own bike. A bike course would be a good idea... because you get licenced after taking the class without doing the test at the dmv not to mention you can use their bikes so you don't have to worry about dumping your new wheels.
3. Yea, it's similar to a manual car when talking the mechanics, but learning to drive a non-autoclutch 4wheeler would be a good way to learn... it's just the same.
4. My first bike was a 2004 suzuki katana 600, and the insurance through progressive (clean driving record and i was 20 at the time) was like 75 a month full coverage (you have to get full coverage if you finanse the bike since they'll put a lien on the title). It's really not as bad as you'd figure it would be.
5. Gixxer might be a little high end for a first bike but if you're careful it'll be cool. I'd suggest a smaller lower power bike (used) for your first, but you make the choice. ninja500 and katana600 are good ones, there are a few others too, and for the mileage find one with as low as you can for you pricerange then have a full maintenance done at your local shop so you know it's safe to drive

^^^^ very informative, i must spread the rep around before i give it to u again :bh. i see that ure located in kansas. u think the test out here in cali would be the same or have a little variation to it? im more than willing to learn. only thing that would stop me is if i couldnt get it insured through my parents policy cuz i already have a low rate with them for car insurance, or getting rejected for financing. i dont wana spend more than $5,000 on a bike if i do get one.

$5000 should get you a nice used bike
cali should be halfway close to our test here in dorthy and toto land, but you can goto the licence bureau and ask for the study booklet, and i think there's a section that tells you about the different tests you'll have to do if i remember correctly...

yeah i looked through the cycle trader and saw several good bikes and looked through some sites here in SD. most of em had around 6k miles on them or so and ranged from 97-02s which i think is perfect. yeah ill give the DMV a call and im sure theyll have all the answers to my questions as far as getting the license.

I don't know if they're national or not, but here in Indiana there is an organizations called ABATE. They provide classes, legal counsel (accidents), stuff like that. I'm not a m-cycle guy, had a buddy who was. You might do a search locally--I know it will help with getting your license, lower your insurance, etc.

Yep this is rep worthy right here, +1 to you.
Is there somewhere online that i can look around for information on bikes like specs and such?
Also is there anything like autotrader or whatever for Bikes so i can look around locally?

Have you even looked at what insurance will cost for the bikes you want? If you want to get a loan for your bike you may need to have a full coverage for it depending on state law.
Sometimes full coverage on a 600cc+ bike with a rider your age will cost more than the bike itself is worth.
