Can someone please point out to me what the difference is between dead lifts and squats are? I was looking on http://www.menshealth.com and the quicktime clips they have look exactly the same...
there are a few different types of squats...the most common are when you put the bar on the back of your shoulders and hold it with both hands, then go down to a sitting position then back up.......there are also hack squats and blah blah.....deadlifts, to me, are when you just pick the bar up while keeping your legs/back/arm's straight and bending over only at the waist....just lift it up as far as you can while leaving your arms down and extended, then set it down.....more for the back and hamstrings, squats is for the whole leg, mostly the quads

what you are talking about is a romain deadlift, this works the lower back area, but you have to do them correctly or you will really mess up your back. Also there are speed dead lifts, squat down and grip the bar, you should be squatting like a catcher in baseball. then you explode up lifting with your legs and lock out at the top.

Which one is better? Speed dead lifts or romain dead lifts. I haven't really worked out my lower body before so I'm kinda new to all this
speed dead lifts take a lot of practice to do them correctly, see if you can find videos online or something to help explain it more. you can do both lifts because they are both beneficial. with romain deadlift make sure to keep your back arched and head up.
Ok cheers i'll check it out, maybe they have something on bodybuilding.com about them. I really want to stay with the program this time around! Lets hope my enthusiasm lasts....
Deadlifts are one of the best exercises one can do. I swear by them, really.
Deadlifts are when you pretty much pick the bar up off the ground in front of you.
Stiff-leg deadlifts (SLDL): Knees slightly bent (I prefer somewhere between 0 and 45 degrees), arched back (NEVER, EVER ROUNDED), shoulders behind the bar.
Regular deadlift: Same as above, but there is leg movement, where you are almost squatting the weight up--as well as pulling.
Sumo deadlift: Arched back, legs wide (somewhere close to the plates), arms inside (grip placement is likely to be a little closer than other deadlift styles), shoulders behind the bar.
Deadlift w/ a shrug: Self-explanatory
Straight-leg deadlift: A lift you should never do, IMO.
Also, to add what everyone else has been saying. Squats are bar on the back. I don't want to get into technique too much (but feel free to ask) as I am not an expert in the squat, and I prefer not to do them regularlly. Different styles of the squat include back (regular) squat, front squat, hack squat, box squat (pretty much a variation rather than a style), wide squat
PS. Do you mind posting the clips. These two exercises are very different, and I wanted to see how they look the same.
upon further investigation, i see it was the dumb bell exercises i was getting confused with, as the barbell squat is clearly different to the dumb bell dead lift i.e bar across shoulders
