Alright so I know there are probably threads on this already but i dont feel like sifting through unrelated thread search results just to find something similar to this.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here takes or has taken creatine. I have been thinking about using it lately but I really don't know much about it and don't want to start using something that might mess me up. I use whey protein right now with my workouts and have seen some pretty good results over the past few months but I feel like I have hit a plateau that I need help progressing past.
I've heard mixed things about creatine so I'm not sure what all I should believe or not believe. Anyone have experience with creatine, or have any knowledge about the supplement?? I would like to hear some first hand accounts with it. What does it do, does it work, does it not work, does it fuck you up in the long run?
I usually lift weights 2-3 times a week and my cardio is 2 miles 3 times a week.
Well, I guess it doesn't have to be first hand accounts. I just would like some opinions on the subject. I can do all the research I want but I value other peoples opinions greatly.
all I know is if you don't cycle it you will become dependent on it
pfffffft where did you hear that?? when i race MX i take 3 pills before, and 3 pills after, for a while i took it everyday.... it never did anything for me as advertized..... but the only reason i still take it is that it makes me heal up quicker so im not so sore after beating the shit out of myself on the bikes or working

yea like ATI said, if you use it you should cycle. usually like a month on and a month off. another thing is you should drink plenty of water. multiply your body weight by .7 and thats about how much water in ounces you should be drinking daily w/ creatine. so if youre like 200lbs, thats around a gallon a day. there have been studies that show that levels too high in the blood can cause interstitial nephritis (kidney problems). L-carnitine may help w/ that but its not definitive. starting w/ a low dose and moving over a week to the normal dose and spending a week tapering the dose down before stopping should also be less stressful on the body. taking it w/ a protein powder, banana, oatmeal, and some simple carbs (like table sugar) after a workout is considered the best time. the sugar spiking insulin which helps the creatine into the muscles faster; but insulin is also responsible for fat storage so limiting it to an after workout shake/meal is best. it shouldnt really be used to get diesel like most ppl do, but just to help w/ recovery imo.
i used to take it but stopped and just replaced it w/ healthy foods (caveman diet). creatine exists naturally in red meat but not in the same levels of supplements.

Well I guess I can speak on the scientific side of what creatine is said to do.
First, some muscle knowledge in simple form: Satellite cells exist around muscle. These satellite cells donate what are called myonuclei to muscle. This results in muscle hypertrophy (growth). That's the completely watered down simplistic way to look at it, but it's more complicated than that.
Anyway, creatine is said to increase satellite activity (aka donating more myonuclei to muscle). This means that when a muscle is damaged (as what happens during excercise) the satellite cells are donating more myonuclei and the muscle hypertrophies.
This is all still controversial as results have not really shown that this works. Even the whole increased satellite activity causing hypertrophy idea is still debated.
Now for my experience: I used it for awhile (powder version). Didn't like it. I was drinking so much water that I had to pee every five minutes. Try sitting in a 3 hour lecture holding it the whole time. Not fun. I never got out of the loading phase so i don't have any results for you.
My Advice: Use Muscle Milk. I used it a long time ago, and I swear by that stuff.

Men's Health has just done an article on performance enhancers, not just HGH and 'roids but creatine, different proteins and other mixtures. I've been lifting for around two years steady and find that the best is just protein. If your really into body building or thinking about starting, a few good magazines to look into are Men's Health and Men's Journal, they have a lot of good shit from exercises, to workout regiments, to diets and everything in between.
