ive been bowling for a few months now i average 140-150 and i got my own ball a couple months now....the problem i have is that i cant hook the ball with my thumb in the ball, even with the custom drilling....im thinkin it the weight of the ball (14 lbs) thats prolly keepin me from controlling it thru the swing a lil more? anyone ever had a similar trouble...? and if so waht did u do to solve ur prollem? my highest game was a 215

Try not using your thumb, i have a 14lbs ball and i tryed curving it with my thumb, just dont happen, i just use my index and middle finger, bowled a 259 last week. Try that. Maybe you should throw it slower if you use your thumb and it wont spin.
oo my bad it prolly came out wrong.....i can spin the ball good without my thumb in the ball, but i figure if i do it with my thumb in the ball i can get a little more speed, but my prollem is i cant hook with my thumb in the ball, i was figurin its cause i cant controll the weight of the ball possibly or im jsut retarded lol
hooking the ball has absolutely NOTHING to do with the weight of the ball. its the weight block and the drilling. you need to buy a ball that is designed to hook. what kind did you get? and the drilling needs to be fingertip. this promotes putting "lift" on the ball which is what puts revs on the ball that make it hook.

Yeah, what he said. Or just bowl a few days and get used to it. My friend just recently bought a ball that hooks too much, but he's kinda getting the hang of it now.

I learned how to throw a hook by extending my arm straight and releasing it like Im going to shake someones hand. I dont think that you will ever be consistant with not having your thumb in the ball--this is just my opinion though use whatever works for you. And you would have to have a hooking ball of course. I used to use a 16lb AMF Menace but moved down to a 15lb Track Freak. A frined of mine has a 15lb Cherry Bomb that has mad action but that ball was about $225. The freak was around $170-180.
