09 Civic Excessive Brake wear
Last year I replaced my daughter's front and rear brake pads on her 2009 Civic with only 30,000 miles on it. I was surprised that they wore out so quickly. I checked that the calipers were floating freely and that they released properly. I attributed it to the way she must be driving, although to be honest, I probably work my Accord brakes harder and they lasted well over 80K before I had to replace them. I used the local auto parts store brand pads on the front, and Honda OEM on the rear.
She just called me last week to tell me that the front (non-OEM) pads are wore down again after another 10-12K miles. Doing a web search, excessive wear seems to be a common problem on Civics of this era. Lots of complaints, but NO solutions.
I plan on doing an extensive diagnosis to try and figure out what's happening.
1. Check to see that the calipers release after holding the brake pedal down for an extended period. If they don't check caliper, master cylinder, and brake lines.
2. Double check that the calipers are floating freely. Replace rubber dust boots, clean and re-grease.
3. Install ceramic brake pads. (Hopefully provide a longer life)
What else should I be looking for or doing??? Could the rotors be causing this??? (I checked run out last year and they were fine)
Thanks
