what's up
What's up,
For the most part my friend (rodel55) followed the instructions on the autotoys website up till the point of grounding it. It's pretty easy to pull out the cluster and expose the gauges as long as you follow the instructions. My car is a 96 civic DX sedan.
A few notes. Make sure to disconnect the red power teriminal from your battery (I'm not sure if it's the positive or negative one) which is closer to the driver's side before you start as not to trigger anything or electrify yourself. Also make sure to fill up your gas tank before you start. It's a lot easier to know the gas needle is at full instead of trying to mark the place where it was and trying to realign it later. Since your gas and oil gauge is on the same cluster your gonna have a good time knocking around both needles trying to get the gauge on haha. Lastly, be careful when you pull out the yellow plug because that's the air bag.
When you get around to putting on the gauges there's one thing I should mention. When you try to slide the gauges onto the needles you'll find out that it won't just "fall" onto the needle because the white bump on the back of the needle blocks it. What you need to do is slide one edge of the circle under the base of the needle to clear the bump on the back (you'll know what i'm talking about when you get there!). Do this by bending the gauge in half (don't worry it won't break the gauge as long as you don't completely fold it in half). My friend also put a little double sided tape to make sure the gauges stay in place. Be careful... you'll now understand why people say these needles are so fragile... they feel so cheap.
Now just plug in the white wires from the gauges into the black box's black wire connectors and close up the cluster just like you opened it (it doesn't matter which order you connect the wires in). You don't really have to make notches in the plastic for the white wires to come out... they'll squeeze between the plastic when you close it up and it didn't seem to affect anything on my gauges. Also remember to plug in those little bulbs you pulled out before you put it all together.
Now the wiring. When you pull out the dimmer switch (just pop that plastic piece out of the dashboard) you'll see that there's a black wire with a red stripe (power), a black wire (ground) and I think one other wire (don't remember the color).
Pull the little black box that's connected to the white wires which are connected to the gauges through the dash near the dimmer switch wires. I have a DX so most of the plastic pieces near so dimmer switch have no function, so you can pop these out making it easier to work with the wires inside the dash compartment. I don't know what goes there if you have an EX, but you can still do it with a little manuevering. Now your black and red wires coming from the black box are close to the dimmer switch wires which your going to splice into.
At this point make sure your battery is disconnected! You'll know you didn't disconnect it if the air bag has already blew in your face... haha jk... but it might happen so make sure the battery is unplugged.
NOW you know how autotoys tells you to splice the red power wire coming from that little box into the black w/red stripe dimmer power wire? Do that. But in addition you can also splice the black ground wire coming from the little black box into the dimmer switch's black ground wire. It's a easier, more practical place to ground than that screw (which you need a ring termial for) they show you on the autotoys website.
When your done splicing the wires and have taped them up with electrical tape or however you cover the exposed wire up, go ahead and plug the green, yellow, and two blue plugs back into your cluster. Then connect your battery terminal to test it out. If your working in the daytime like we were get a thick blanket, cover your head and the dash, and turn on the headlights! If it works good for you! Move on.
Now you just have to find a place to put that little black box to rest, and where the long ribbon with the controls is gonna come out. Remember you have those white wires that connect to the actual gauges (remember to plug them in before you assemble the gauge back together haha) which then leads to the little black box, and out the other end comes the black and red wires which you splice into the dimmer switch wires and the ribbon with the controls on it.
NOW just put the gauge cluster back in with that black plastic piece and wait for it to turn dark haha.
I hope this helps you! My friend taught me all this stuff and I"m just passing along the knowledge!

Jake

nice directions. i'm saving these to my how-to file. . . did you take any photos of the install? or the finished product? you might wanna have your how-to added to the sticky how-to, faqs, etc thread... just PM one of the mods, or i could do it for you.

whoa, ive hooked up regular white indiglos and reverse indiglos in two different cars and the install was nothing like that. The way i hooked them up was way easier. It may be because i hooked them up in a 93 civic and a 94. eh...that just seemed way too complicated.

nice directions!!! i'm probably going to try to put them on this wednesday so i'll c how these directions will go...BTW has anyone put any on on their 99-00 civ?
Originally posted by Hossfowler Click the link he gave, and look at the picture, the gagues are backwards, my tach is on the left. Maybe they are a defect
which link are you talking about? the autotoys install has the tach on the left, just like our gauge clusters.

What's up,
I'm flattered that you'd want to make it a sticky haha, but it's up to them anyways. But yeah, sorry guys no pictures! But autotoys shows everything but the actual disassembly of the cluster and the organization of the wiring inside your dash. About the tach on the left thing. I noticed that too on the auction page, but I think they were just hooking them up to a power source for pictures. You'll see that their (the gauges) just loose pieces and the white wires don't connect together at a point or anything. All you have to do is get them in a position that will be able to connect into the black connecters coming from the transformer (the little black box).

Jake

well, last night i drove over my friend's house at about 11:30 (he lives out in Schrerville, IN & me coming out from Lansing, IL) and we went at it...it kind'a sucked that the guages didn't have any instructions, but thanks to the links you guys gave, it was pretty straight forward and easy...we did have to drill in some holes in the plastic for the white cords to come through b/c the speedometer was bent near the 40-50 mark...everything went smoothly, connected the fire wire to the parking wire, like you guys said and voila! we have reverse indigloS!!! it was koo for me b/c they were installed at night (but sucked during installation...) i'll post pics when i can - and i just stuck that black box in the back and the wires are just behind the cluster...oh well, hopefully it won't get too bad...

Yeah, mine used to be somewhat hard to read when the sun hit them directly.. It caused a glare and I couldn't see 'em.. I had the regular white faced, 2 color indiglos a while back..

that's pretty much what i'm afraid of. . i like being able to see my gauges. . . anyone else want to post their experiences with the sun directly hitting your aftermarket gauges? especially those of you that have the ones with the blue numbering
