Hi; I'm new to the forum and all. My husband and I are looking into purchasing a 1999 Honda Civic EX sedan. It has 90k miles on it and it's a pretty smoothe ride.
Problem is this: The owner says you have to let it warm up for aprox 6 minutes before the RPMs go down to between 650-900. Until then it runs between 1100-1200. Is this normal? Living in Florida it's not due to the cold weather or anything. We really hate to buy this vehicle and find out something is wrong with it.
Please help!!! Does anyone know what their civic usually idles at when it first starts up? The owner may not know what he's talking about because it was his ex wife's car he is selling and has told us he has barely driven it. I don't know if he knows what he is talking about or not...

Hey well i own a prelude an when it starts it idles higher until it warms up, thats as far as i know caused by an automatic choke. If you need i can get a proper explanation for it because i asked my mechanic about it and he explained it properly but I've forgotten it
Anyways by all means it isn't a problem but with any car i would still get it inspected by your mechanic a $50 dollar inspection might save you hundreds in the long term

That is quite normal. If you want to accelerate getting it into a true idle, just peg the throttle lightly a couple times, when the revs drop, it'll usually bring it back to a true idle (750 rpms).

I'm taking it in tomorrow morning for a 50 point inspection. Hopefully that will cover the basics and necessities. I've been googling abut the idle all night and I think (and hope) I've come to the conclusion that it's normal. I've never in the past let my car warm up for 6 minutes though. That sucks - big time.
Thanks, I appreciate the quick replies.

Well in my opinion you don't need to let it warm up for 6 minutes, i easily jump into my prelude straight away and drive and the idle fixes itself

OK took it in and everything is good. The A/C doesn't work; which is probably due to needs to be recharged or there could be a leak ($650 expense). Also when I was driving back home the SRS light kept flashing....
The mechanic said it was a clean car and engine looked good but now I'm just not sure. Why the heck would the srs light flash?

Thanks I would appreciate that very much.
Needless to say, we bought the car tonite. We couldn't go wrong with the price $4800 for a 99 EX civic with 90k on it. Waaay below blue book. I just hope it's nothing major. That srs light hasn't come on since earlier this afternoon.

SRS light? this may sound quite n00bish, but is that "serive required soon"? This light has never come on for me so I'm just curious....

SRS is supplemental restraint system. Basically its the airbag system. Why in the hell would you let it warm up that long just because the idle is high? The basics of this for any engine is that the car doesn't idle well until the engine warms up so there is some system to make the idle run a little high at first. Honestly you can red line that car and burn rubber out of the parking lot 10 sec after you start it and it shouldn't hurt it. And finally the AC. You should be able to get a decent shop to diagnose the leak for under an hour of labor. For that age/mileage of car the most likely thing is a impact to the condenser (its right in front of the radiator).
