I just purchased a Honda (so I'm new to the engines, etc...) I have a d16y8 according to the code on my engine block (2000 EX - Si here in Canada) and it's an automatic.
I've seen photos on other forums that say as long as you have the following vtec solenoid (then you have a SOHC vtec):
My engine definitely has this solenoid.... but after looking at other pics of 2000 EX's (with a d16y8 engine) I also noticed their engines also had the head/cover with the writing "VTEC" or "Honda" like the following pics:
the d16y8 valve cover never said vtec on it, but yes your engine does have vtec
make sure to read threw some sticky's and other threads and also search before you make a thread, a lot of this has been covered and there are a lot of people on here that will flame you for not searching, not everyones as nice as me

but didn't see any discussion on how to determine (visually) whether you have a sohc vtec or not. If you were referring to a particular thread... please point me in the right direction, and I'll be happy to read up.
Another thing that I find confusing is that my engine code says I have a D16y8, and I have what is considered the Si 2000 here in Canada (2 dr coupe with sunroof, etc...). So if that's the case, why does the following code say I have a CANADA EX?
ex:
EJ8 D16Y8 CANADA All 2-door EX
EJ8 D16Y8 USDM All 2-door/4-door EX
I have an Si (according to the logo on the car, 2 dr coupe and moonroof, etc...), so shouldn't my engine say I have a D16y7 as follows?:
you sure some kid didn't just put the si logo on your car?
that's what i'm trying to figure out - lol
but here in Canada if you have a 2 dr coupe and it has a moonroof, it usually means it's an Si or SiR (I don't think the 2000 EX model here in Canada has a moonroof). Maybe they do in the states....
yes, in the U.S., but I'm talking about the EX's here in Canada. An EX from the U.S. is the same model as an SI here in Canada (at least for the 6th gen models).
Mine also has Power locks, windows, cruise, etc... and I don't think the EX's here in Canada have all these options...
I told you in D-series tech, regardless of what the Canadian/US differences are between trims etc etc, if your block or timing belt cover says it is a D16y8, then you have a 1.6 liter SOHC vtec regardless of if the valve cover says so or not.
