Actually, the DX has no VTEC at all, it is the HX that has the VTEC-E system. You are right though that the car geared for lower performance is going to respond better to modifications than a "higher-performance" car is going to. I would imagine that the DX stock intake system is very restrictive when compared to the EX because of the fact that the EX has VTEC. Granted, it is not a very aggresive VTEC system, but it does need to be able to flow more air, that is how VTEC works, by allowing more air to enter the cylinder at higher RPMs via a more aggresive cam profile. And while the EX is rated at 127 hp at the flywheel and the DX or 105 or 106 (I can't remember exactly how much), that doesn't translate to a huge difference at the wheels, especially if the DX doesn't have A/C or powersteering. Without those, the DX doens't lose as much hp as the EX between the crank and the ground.
